General surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Sporadic paint losses, most notably a circular loss (approx. 0.25cm dia.) in the sea to lower left hand side. Other smaller losses elsewhere. Small patch of damage and losses towards upper r/h corner. Paint thin in places, likely by design. Not examined under UV. Not examined out of the frame.

Follower of Thomas Hickey (Irish, 1741-1824) Portrait of a gentleman, half length, wearing a blue coat and white stock, oil on canvas, 11½ x 9 inches (29.5cm by 23cm) (oval) * In fully restored condition. Stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. The paint surface has been flattened, thinned and somewhat abraded by the restoration process. Now with surface dirt and discoloured varnish in evidence. The odd very minor instance of craquelure. Several passages of retouching, overpainting and filling are evident under UV, most notably a patch under the gentleman's stock that is likely repair to an old damage.

(49.5cm x 59.5cm) *Provenance: Bears partial gallery label verso '81 London Street, Reading'. * Overall in a fairly tired condition. A prompt visit to a picture restorer would be advisable. Original canvas. Small oval shaped patch repair to reverse. Covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Medium/widely spaced craquelure throughout, mostly stable although some areas are beginning to flake and require intervention. There are two areas of damage to the canvas, one just above the centre of the horses neck, the other to the left of the front hoof. These two damages have gone through the canvas and will need patching. Frame rubbing to edges. Several passages of overpainting and retouching are visible under UV, including most of the body of the horse, likely to repair the damage that required patching. A SMALL PURPLE-SPLASHED JUN-GLAZED DISH, JIN TO YUAN DYNASTY 金至元鈞窯紫斑折沿小盤 Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 1115-1368. Thickly potted with shallow rounded sides rising from a short foot to a broad everted rim with a gently raised lip. Covered overall in a rich, finely crackled, sky-blue glaze thinning to mushroom at both raised edges of the rim, finely pooling to the underside around the unglazed foot revealing the brown ware, and decorated to the interior with three distinct purple splashes, one with a small patch of dark-green oxidation.Expert’s note: The present dish shows a small patch of very dark green precipitated among one of the purple clouds, which has been noted to occur due to high concentration of copper oxide. See Rosemary Scott, Imperial Taste: Chinese Ceramics from the Percival David Foundation, London, 1989, page 39. The glaze is of remarkably quality and the dish displays exceptionally.Provenance: French trade. Acquired from an old estate in northern France, by repute. Condition: Excellent condition with some ancient wear and expected firing irregularities, such as small glaze recesses to the base, and a single copper oxide spot to the rim. The dramatic use of purple and red decoration is one of the major innovations of the Jun kilns. Of flattened form and boldly carved in openwork to depict a sinuous dragon, its body finely decorated with partly interlocking C-scrolls, the long curved horn and curling tail neatly incised, the mouth pierced with a small aperture. The finely polished, translucent jade of a pale gray tone with a black patch, icy inclusions, and russet veins.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. T.7.6. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou’s years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou’s drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China’s rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968, he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the museum became a ‘must see’ destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China’s glorious history. Of flattened form, the S-shaped dragon is finely carved in openwork with subtle incision work detailing the eyes, ears, and mane of the dragon, and neatly decorated with spiral and cross-hatched designs. The translucent stone is of a celadon hue with a dark brown patch at the head, the horn and ear of a paler beige tone, the shadings of the stone skillfully incorporated by the lapidary.Provenance: From an old private collection in southern Germany, assembled via inheritance in the 1950s and acquisitions from the 1960s to the 1980s, and thence by descent within the family. Naturalistically carved, the recumbent ram with its legs tucked underneath, looking straight ahead with almond-shaped eyes, further detailed with grooved horns curving down the back of its neck towards its jaw, an accentuated back bone finishes at the tail which is slightly twisted to one side. The translucent stone of deep celadon tone with a faint yellow hue and cloudy inclusions as well as icy and russet veins.Provenance: Boston trade.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and few minuscule nicks to the cover’s rim.
