Butson, Som: L.I.); British War and Victory Medals (10312 Pte. E. F. Butson. Som. L. I.); Memorial Plaque (Edward [sic] Frederick Butson) small patch of verdigris on back of star, otherwise generally very fine (4) £120-£160 --- Edwin Frederick Butson was born in Barton Hill, Bristol, and attested there for the Somerset Light Infantry. He served with the 6th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 21 May 1915, and was killed in action on 18 August 1916, on which date the Battalion was involved in an attack on Delville Wood, suffering a total of 280 casualties. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Sold with two unofficial commemorative medals.

Moyr Smith, many tinted, tissue-guards (one working loose), illustrations, ink ownership inscriptions to front free endpaper, the odd spot or patch of finger-soiling, gutter weak, some scattered spotting to endpapers, original morocco-backed dark blue cloth, gilt, quite rubbed with a few patches of soiling, spine with small loss to foot, t.e.g., others uncut, folio, Bernard Quaritch, 1892.⁂ Rare, the last copy appearing at auction in 1921. The illustrator, John Moyr Smith, was a Scottish architect who produced ceramic tiles for Minton, including pictorial tiles depicting themes from Shakespeare.
