Royal Humane Society, small bronze medal (successful) (Peter John Sargeant. 24th June 1952.) complete with bronze brooch buckle in its Elkington case of issue, good very fine £200-£240 --- ‘The rescue took place on 24 June 1952 on the mud flats at the mouth of the River Colne, at Ray Creek, Point Clear, St. Osyth, Essex. Barry Trevor Stock, aged 10 years, attempted to ride his cycle across the mud flats as a short cut to the far shore starting at about 9.00p.m. About 200 yards out, the front wheel dropped into a hole of soft mud and the boy fell into the hole with the bicycle on top of him. He struggled but could not get up, so he shouted for help. It was nearly an hour before his cries were heard and by that time it was quite dark. William Norman Station-Bevan, his wife and others tried to find the boy without avail. Station-Bevan then brought his car to the cliff top and lit up the flats with his headlights. This helped Peter John Sargeant and Harold Benjamin Glynn who were having difficulty in locating Stock from the sound of his cries. They sank to their waists in a soft patch, tried a fresh cast and reached the boy. Here Sargeant borrowed Glynn’s stick, clambered into the soft hole and freed the boy whom he carried to safety. Glynn, a sick man, could not assist in this being exhausted by his efforts. For their efforts in rescuing Barry Stock, Peter Sargeant, a schoolboy aged 15 years, was awarded the R.H.S. Bronze Medal and Harold Glynn, a window cleaner, aged 27 years, was awarded the R.H.S. Certificate on Vellum’ (Case No. 62,653).

Lot 283

A good George III mahogany, serpentine fronted chest of drawers, or commode, crossbanded and inlaid with floral marquetry and boxwood stringing, the moulded top with a central oval panel above 4 well-figured, graduated and cock-beaded long drawers, flanked on each side by a canted corner inlaid with a trailing floral festoon, the sides of the commode curved, raised on shaped bracket feet, inlaid with stringing and unusually the each front canted corner inlaid with a stylised acanthus-type flower, some minor damage, losses and restoration, 109cm wide x 64cm deep x 97.5cm highFootnote: It is common to find the canted corners of these late 18th century chests showing blind fretwork, but unusual to find them inlaid. It is still more rare to see marquetry decoration and more rare still to see the canted corners of the bracket feet inlaid with marquetry. This example has both these features. it begs the question, who made this. Lot 64 sold on the 18th of November 2009 at Bonhams Bond Street for £19,200 (including premium), shares very similar marquetry canted corners. The floral pendants are strikingly alike, but there are no other significant comparisons to be made.Clearly, the maker of this commode was of note. Whether it was someone like Henry Kettle, who incorporated oval medallion inlaid tops and inlaid canted corners on his George III serpentine fronted mahogany commodes (see lot 44 in Bonhams' Bond Street sale on the 11th of march 2015), it is difficult to say.Henry Kettle was based in 18 St Paul's Church Yard, London, from circa 1773. In 1774 he took over Philip Bells' business (number 23 St Paul's Church Yard). He is known to have operated until circa 1797 and to have made shaped chests, or commodes, as well as wardrobes, Pembroke tables and bookcases. He supplied Saltram house, Devon and Wolverley House in Worcestershire; other commissions included Longford Hall, Salop. Condition report: Some damage including chips along back edges and especially lower edge of moulding beneath bottom drawer and 14cm vertical crack back of left side. Dents consistent with age and use, including canted corners and top. Top with old patinated ring stains and marks and slight loss of colour.Losses, including 3cm x 2cm patch back left of top, 6cm section back of right side edge and much of border veneers of bracket feet. Water staining on feet.Restorations, including 5cm x 5cm rectangular patch and 2cm circular patch front left of top and left side of oval panel. Johann Nepomuk Mayrhofer (1764-1832) AustrianA still life of variegated Tulips, Narcissus, Roses and Convolvulus arranged in a wicker basket on a stone ledge with butterflies feeding and in the surroundingInitialled, oil on canvas, 44cm by 36.5cmFootnote: Mayrhofer, whose work often reveals the influence of early Dutch masters such as Ambrosius Bosschaert, was highly regarded in his time for fruit and flower pieces which, according to The Dictionary of 19th Century Austrian Painters, ‘he managed to render with great realism and an extraordinary freshness in the colours thanks to his great technical skills’.Condition report: In fully restored condition, relined, cleaned and revarnished. The brown to rust coloured butterfly at the top of the arrangement is likely strengthened throughout. The dark green and shadowy leaves approx. 1/3 down of the arragnement on the left hand side have likely been strengthened as have some of the corresponding dark green silohuettes of foliage between Delphiniums and the prominent Tulip forming the finial of the display. The upper right hand side of the monogram on the horizonal has been delicately retouched. There are approx. 3 tiny retouches within the outer petals of the prominent central pink Rose laid on the stone top and within the leaf right and below of this. There is little further to discern under a UV light but it does not exclude the possiblity of further considered intervention - for example there is a subtle but slightly incongrous looking essentialy rectangular patch of darker paint at the tip of the delicate sprig on the right hand side of the decoration and detailing to denote the dark purple Tulip on the right hand side which could have also recvied a degree of restoration. A band of medium sized craquelure to centre of stone ledge which is beginning to show signs of lifting. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish.
