An antique diamond and sapphire plaque ring, featuring an inky blue cabochon sapphire to the centre, surrounded by an oval plaque inlaid with round, brilliant cut diamonds. Ring size J.Condition report: The sapphire measures 11 x 6.5mm. approx. The top of the sapphire has some miniscule pits and tiny scratches to the surface – these are visible to the naked eye as a very slight ‘matting’ to the shine on the top of the cabochon. There is also one larger (approx. 1.5mm) old surface scratch to the sapphire just off the top to one side – it is not particularly deep and is old so the edges are worn, but it can just about be felt with a fingernail. With a light shone from underneath the stone, some clear natural dark & light contrasting striations can be seen low down on one side just above the setting, along with a patch of silvery inclusions – this patch of inclusions are also visible from underneath with a light shone through the top of the stone. When worn, these inclusions are not visible. The diamonds all appear to be original – one of the larger side ones at one end has a small chip to the girdle (which is beneath a claw and was therefore presumably caused pre-mounting). That same stone also has two small chips to the edge of the table – one is very sharp and may in fact be an inaccurate cut from during the cutting. Our approximation is that the diamonds weigh approx. 0.5ct total. The millegrain setting is in good condition, with some wear as expected at either end. On the shoulders, one of the central ‘leaf’ pieces stretching from the millegrain edge to the shoulder has been off and has been reattached with tiny spots of clear glue). It seems secure but obviously it would be preferable to have a soldered repair. The shank does not appear to have been sized. There are no hallmarks. The metal tests as platinum of an electronic tester. We believe that the ring dates from the 1930s.
A diamond solitaire ring, the round cut diamond weighing approximately 1ct and set in a 9ct yellow gold band. Ring size M.* Condition: The diamond has no chips or damage. Overall SI1, colour J-K. Very little fluorescence under UV.The stone has a small patch of cavity line inclusions near the girdle, which show on the surface and can be felt with a fingernail. There is a fine feather inclusion to the side and a small patch of mineral inclusions including tiny carbon spots in the same place. There is also a patch of cloud inclusions around one claw.
A Globe Wernicke honey oak filing cabinet bookcase, early 20th century, the glazed top with two sliding doors and four shelves, over a base with two slides over four drawers and five deep filing drawers beneath, within panelled sides, 41½ x 18in. (105.5 x 45.75cm.), 73¾in. (192.5cm.) high.* Condition: Good condition overall – the drawers and glazed sliding doors operate cleanly. The upper short drawers are missing the back stops so can be pushed too far in. There is minor woodworm to the front corners of two top drawers – this should be treated as we do not know hold old it is. The plywood back panel to the top glazed section has been replaced recently. There is some surface rust spotting to the steel strap mounts to the sides. There are a few scratches to the varnished finish and a patch of varnish damage to the centre of the base section top. The piece does not have any keys
Alfred Reginald Thomson, R.A. (British, 1894-1979), Portrait of a Russian soldier watercolour on paper with pencil grid scale and annotations to margins, signed 'A.R. Thomson' lower right, unframed 42¾ x 17½in. (108.5 x 44.5cm.) * This is an important preparatory design sketch by Thomson for his immense, large-scale portrait of a Red Army soldier, which measured 64 x 24ft. It was used as the centrepiece of the backdrop at a fundraising concert to mark the 26th anniversary of the Red Army, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London on 24th February 1944. A colour photograph taken at the event by the Ministry of Information official photographer, shows the portrait hanging behind the massed choirs and orchestra, against a red backdrop and flanked tiered Soviet and Union Jack flags. Alfred Thomson (known as 'Tommy' for his wartime paintings), was born in Bangalore, India and was deaf from birth, learning sign language at a specialist school in Margate after the family's return from India. He attended the London Art School in Kensington for a time, tutored by John Hassall, but failed to pass entry into the R.A. School and was sent to work on a farm in Kent by his father, who forbade any further involvement in art as a profession. Despite this, Thomson left the farm and found his first paid work as an artist designing posters at Vitagraph in Longacre, thereafter establishing himself as a commercial artist, figural painter and caricaturist after WW1. After a number of wartime commissions, in September 1942 he became a full-time salaried artist attached to the Air Ministry and was elected as a Royal Academician in 1945, becoming a highly respected society portraitist after the war. Well known works include portraits of the Queen and Royal Family, murals for the Queen Mary ocean liner, Duncannon Hotel in London and the Science Museum, the House of Parliament and House of Lords in session (c.1960-62) and The Beatles (1964). ** This sketch is owned by descendants of the family who ran Harkers Studio in Southwark, South London, a painting rooms for theatrical scenery founded in 1904 by the renowned theatre scene painter and backdrop designer, Joseph Harker. The huge, full size portrait of the Red Army soldier was painted at Harkers Studio, several members of the Harker family being involved in production of the piece, including the vendor's father, Colin Harker, who painted the soldier's boots. * Condition: The sheet has been rolled and stored for many years and therefore has some roll-creasing visible throughout. There are also some vertical creases visible from handling and storage, some showing as irregular white lines thrugh the paint. Small hole to top centre margin, three small tears to upper right margin and several pin holes to lower margin. Small brown spot stain to lower margin and some tiny paint flakes and rubs to paint surface, with one slightly larger flake just below signature. Small patch of white paint spots to right of figure's left shoulder. Paper is lightly toned and more heavily toned to reverse. Unframed, not mounted. Accompanied by a fibreboard sheet with hand written notes from the family regarding the history of the painting - this large sheet has been broken in two but could easily be re-joined.
Harris, Frances (British-Canadian, 1913-2017), Cold December, Paradise Flats (Summerland '78) oil on panel, signed lower left, inscribed and dated to artist's label verso 11½ x 9½in. A Chinese watercolour scroll painting, probably Qing, 19th century, on a later silk scroll, depicting scholarly retreats in a majestic mountain landscape, signed and dedicated and with two red artist's seals, 52½ x 13in. (133.3 x 33cm.). * Condition: Appears to be an older painting which has had some restoration and has been remounted onto a later silk backing in the mid-20th century. Sharp edged crease to centre right of sheet. Large 2.5 x 1in patch of restoration to paper with repair patches to margin at right of signature, two other much smaller patches below and another small patch below lower seal mark. Two small patches of restoration to centre of painting (one to a small worn hole, one to an insect mark) - two other insect marks to surface of paper to left and below these patches. Two other larger restored patches to centre in lower half of painting. A little light foxing.
A Chinese watercolour scroll painting, probably early 20th century, depicting scholars and pine trees in an extensive mountain landscape, signed, inscribed and with two red artist's seal marks, 59 x 31¾in. (150 x 80.5cm.). * Condition: Some light dirt marks to edges from handling and larger patch of dirty marks to surface of paper to left of signature & inscription. Small crease top left. Otherwise good.
A Moorcroft Tudric tazza in Eventide pattern, c.1920, tubelined and glazed, impressed 'Made in England TUDRIC MOORCROFT 01358' to planished pewter base, the dish impressed 'Moorcroft Made in England' and with painted initials, 7 3/8in. (18.7cm.) diameter, 3 5/8in. (9.2cm.) high, alterations. * Condition: Suspected alterations to pewter base, fixing to bowl definitely later - the removeable chrome domed cap is covering a plastic rawl plug fixed into the pewter base. The pewter base also appears to be glued to the dish. The dish was originally on a stand - the hole has not been later drilled and has the correct edge to the glaze around the hole. The dish has one very small glaze frit to the rim. There is a patch of corrosion to the pewter to one side of the base.
