Lot 6

A rare Derby biscuit figure of Admiral Lord Howe, circa 1795Modelled standing look to his right, resting one hand on a cannon, a spyglass in the other, a shield and a sextant to one side of the naturalistic base, 28.4cm high, patch marks, incised crown, crossed batons and D marks, 'N 384' and repairer's markFootnotes:The large-scale British victory over the French on the 'Glorious First of June' was celebrated as Lord Howe's finest moment. Just weeks afterwards, in July 1794 correspondence between Derby's proprietor William Duesbury II and Joseph Lygo, manager of the factory's London warehouse, show that the former requested an image of the war hero so that a statuette could be modelled and put into production. In a series of letters Lygo recalls advice given by Lady Howe that they should use the portrait by John Singleton Copley, in her opinion 'the only good likeness there is' of her husband. Duesbury received a print of the portrait that October but in the meantime the modeller, most likely William Coffee, was able to start the figure from helpful descriptions forwarded by Lygo; 'My Lord Howe is a strong Bony man I think full six feet high and carries very little flesh'. See also Brian Bicknell's discussion on the modeller being Coffee rather than Stephan as previously suggested, The Derby Porcelain International Society Newsletter, No.28 (1993), pp.4-9.A coloured and gilt example of the figure is in the Collection at Upton Park, Warwickshire, inv.no. NT446215. Model number 384 was identified in 1898 by William Bemrose as 'Lord Howe'.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Battle of Camperdown: a South Staffordshire enamel patch box, circa 1800Painted with ten ships in neat formation, inscribed 'Admiral Duncan forming the line against the Dutch fleet', a raised dot and gilt border on the deep blue ground, a mirror affixed to the interior, 5.2cm wideFootnotes:Admiral Adam Duncan defeated the Dutch fleet off the coast of Camperduin on 11 October 1797. The British captured eleven enemy ships and lost none, effectively removing the Dutch from rest of the French Revolutionary War. Otherwise, the inscription perhaps refers to Nelson's victory at the Nile in 1798, where the French flagship exploded and caught fire. The second box is unusual in that the narrative is somewhat compressed, Nelson standing weeping at his own posthumous monument, the legend 'Immortal Nelson' taken literally. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 100

Battle of the Nile: Two South Staffordshire enamel patch boxes, circa 1800Painted with ships engaged in battle, the larger example inscribed 'L'Oriont [sic] on Fire in the Glorious Victory by Adm. NELSON, 1st August 1798', the French flagship ablaze, the green-ground example inscribed 'The French Fleet Defeated Aug 1st 1798', an enemy ship caught in the crossfire of the British lines, with mirrors to the interior lids, 5.2cm and 4.6cm wide (2)Footnotes:The battle of the Nile caused a sensation whereby people sought to reference everything Nelson and Egyptian in their material culture, from fashion to interiors. These small boxes offered a relatively inexpensive and highly portable, visible way to show you were patriotic, and more importantly in vogue. The more extreme reactions to this trend were gently sneered at by contemporary cartoonists, see 'Dresses a la Nile respectfully dedicated to the Fashion Mongers of the day' published by William Holland and on display at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, inv. PAF3864.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

In this book Levy adds a reference 'Apart from the single figures of the 60s, the artist also explored the relationship of groups of figures such as this. Once again they are not so much compositions in the strict sense of the word, as studies in the problem of communication. Lowry was haunted by this idea, and once told the writer that he did not believe that, in the end, any human being could really make contact with another. His own sense of isolation led him to show his characters' isolation even when they are apparently taking part in some joint activity. Frequently they are set in situations, and settings, which serve to emphasise this isolation'. N.B. a copy of Mervyn Levy's Drawings of L.S. Lowry book accompanies this lot. Condition Report: One very small brown speckle possible foxing dot bone boys head, small patch of staining/discolour to the top left of the image, overall the image is presented well with strong colours and good condition.
