:AN UNUSUAL GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE WITH TRIANGULAR BORE, late 17th century, with 29in. octagonal sighted barrel chiselled with a band of beadwork at the breech, lock with pierced wheel-cover and cock engraved with a monster, characteristic full stock with inlaid decoration including bone dragons, grotesque masks, serpents, a lion-mask, a hunter armed with a spear and a bow with his dog, a scene involving a cloaked archer with two dogs about to shoot a running boar, and classically inspired mythical figures, all bordered by inlaid bone lines and interspersed with mother-of-pearl diamonds and engraved roundels, shaped engraved mother-of-pearl escutcheon opposite the lock, sliding patchbox cover engraved with a classical warrior surrounded by scrollwork, indented iron trigger-guard, engraved bone fore-end cap, and later bone-tipped ramrod (some scattered pitting to lock, some minor repair and replacement to bone inlay, butt-plate replaced); together with a horn priming-flask with integral iron wheel-lock spanner.
