A pair of 60 bore flintlock boxlock pocket pistols by Riviere, London, c1820, 5” overall, turn off barrels 1½” with engraved band at breech end, the breeches signed and with London proofs (very worn on one pistol); the frames engraved with trophies and roped lower edge, the cocks with a fish; with rollers on frizzen springs, top safeties which lock the frizzens, hidden triggers, and plain walnut slab butts. One pistol GWO & C (slightly worn with small patch of pitting), the other pistol WO & basically GC (worn, butt fracture repaired); in their fitted green baize lined mahogany case, the lid with folding brass carrying handle, maker’s trade label of “Riviere, Gun Maker, No 121 Oxford Street”, altered in ink “Removed to No 315), containing a copper powder flask, a 48 bore steel pincer mould, and a modern barrel key. Note: Riviere was at 121 Oxford Street from 1809 to 17, and moved to 315 Oxford Street in 1818. Plate 31 .
A cased mid 19th century double barrelled 38 bore percussion boxlock side hammer pistol, 9” overall, octagonal barrels 4”, with Birmingham proofs, scroll engraving at breeches, engraved on the top rib “Barratt & Son, Burton on Trent”, and with swivel ramrod; with scroll engraved frame, hammers and trigger guard, finely chequered rounded walnut butt, and rectangular escutcheon. Good Working Order and Generally Crisp Condition, retaining some original colour hardened finish; in its purple velvet lined fitted mahogany case; containing flattened hexagonal section copper flask by Sykes, retaining most original finish, 48 bore steel pincer mould, nipple key, cap tin with paper label for Starkey’s No 48 percussion caps, and pewter oil bottle, (minor damage to case, oil bottle worn). Very Good Working Order and Condition, the engraving crisp, with some original finish overall; in their blue velvet lined fitted mahogany case with walnut veneered lid, containing shell embossed copper flask (worn), brass mounted wooden cleaning rod, wad punch and an Eley cap tin. An interesting early nineteenth century blue glazed and sprig moulded dedicated flask on feet, circa 1830-40. It is decorated with sprigs of dogs and kings. It also has moulded letters; T D and painted letters B T. The feet and stopper are marbled . 22 cm tall. (1)From the estate of the late Norman Walmsley. Condition: Chip to lid and loss sprig losses.
