Finely carved as an elephant with its head turned to one side, dressed with a tasseled saddlecloth draped across its back, supporting two boys, one holding up a flask. Two further boys beside the elephant are carrying a large and heavy baluster vase. The superbly polished, translucent stone is of a yellow tone with a slightly greenish tinge and distinct russet veins, which are more prominent to the back and rather faint to the front, as well as cloudy inclusions.Provenance: British trade, by repute from an English private collection.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and few microscopic nicks. A pair of rare 48 bore superimposed load tap action flintlock boxlock pocket pistols, by Nicholson, Corn Hill, London, c 1790, 8” overall, turn off 2 section barrels 3½” with engraved muzzles, the breeches numbered 1 and 2, and with London proofs, the floral engraved trigger guards, and plain flat sided walnut butts.  GWO & clean condition; One barrel is longer than the other. In their green baize lined fitted rosewood case with folding brass carrying handle, containing a small copper powder flask by Sykes and a replacement steel combination muzzle/barrel key.
