He served as an MP between 1780 and 1802 and as an officer in the 8th Regiment of Foot, and was responsible, with the architect Sir Robert Smirke, for the creation of Lowther Castle in its pseudo-Gothic splendour, where he was a generous patron of artists and writers. His last recorded work was for a series of firearms comprising twelve double shotguns, six double rifles, and three rifled carbines made for the Emperor Franz Josef I. He stopped working in 1854 and his son Anton took over the business.

A FINE CASED PAIR OF PRESENTATION 0.236 CALIBRE FRENCH PERCUSSION GALLERY OR TARGET PISTOLS BY LE PAGE, ARQUEBUSIER DU ROI A PARIS, NO.3444, DATED 1833 with heavy browned octagonal barrels, signed in gilt letters on the top flats 'Le Page Arqer du Roi' between a pair of fronds, inscribed 'Acier Fondu' and numbered '1' and '2' respectively in gold, struck with the date and the serial number beneath, case-hardened numbered breeches inlaid with two gold lines and fitted with pierced platinum plugs, engraved case-hardened tangs incorporating the back-sights, struck with serial numbers inside and numbered in gold en suite with the barrels on top, scroll-engraved case-hardened flush-fitting back-action locks signed in gold within gold ovals, engraved case-hardened hammers en suite, highly figured rootwood half-stocks numbered in the barrel channel and at the breeches, carved with a batwing design over the fore-ends, finely chequered butts with rightward protruding integral pommels carved with lions masks issuant with foliage, finely engraved case-hardened spurred steel trigger-guards, gold barrel bolt escutcheons, and much original finish throughout: in their original fitted case veneered in rosewood, the lid inlaid with brass bands (cracked across the top), the central escutcheon with presentation inscription, the interior of the lid lined in purple velvet (areas of wear, two patches bleached), the remaining interior lined in tooled gilt leather, complete with accessories comprising case-hardened bullet mould numbered en suite brass-mounted copper flask, mallet, and brass ramrod 22.5 cm; 8 7/8 in barrels The presentation inscription reads: 'Prix donné par Le Prince Royal Camp de Compiègne 1837' Sold with a copy of the presentation details: 'Ces pistolets ont été offerts par S. A. R. Monseigneur le duc d'Orléans à M. Trauers, Capitaine au 55e regiment d'infanterie de ligne, pour récompenser de son mémoire por lequel il reçut le premier prix, au camp de Compiègne, le 1er Septembre 1837.'

˜A FINE CASED PAIR OF 24-BORE FLINTLOCK DUELLING PISTOLS BY JOHN MANTON, LONDON, NO. 3259 FOR 1799 with heavy rebrowned twist octagonal sighted scratch rifled barrels signed in gold capital letters on the top flats and numbered beneath, silver fore-sights, case-hardened patent breeches incorporating the back-sights, inlaid with gold-lines and with gold-lined vents, border-engraved case-hardened tangs decorated with foliage, trophies-of-arms and a starburst, signed case-hardened border-engraved flat bevelled locks, engraved with foliage on the borders, trophies on the tails and starbursts beneath the pans, fitted with detents, blued bolt safety-catches, semi-rainproof pans, and rollers on the steel and springs, highly figured walnut full stocks numbered inside the barrel channels, chequered rounded butts, blued spurred trigger-guards numbered within ovals carried by trophies-of-arms on the bows, blued trigger-plates with pineapple finials, horn-tipped ramrods, one perhaps the original (the other restored), and some early finish throughout: in an early fitted mahogany case, the lid with circular escutcheon incorporating a carrying handle (the rear left corner cracked), with ivory key escutcheon the interior lined in green baize (light wear, small holes), with some accessories including three-way powder-flask, bullet mould and turn-screw 28.2 cm; 11 1/8 in barrels
