BECKWITH' and with stepped-tail, rainproof pan and roller (one cock and both steels replaced, both steels refaced, figured walnut pistolgrip half-stock with chequered grip, silver mounts including trigger-guard engraved with four partridge in a landscape and butt-plate engraved with a trophy of arms, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, and later brass-mounted ramrod (some discolouration to locks), London proof marks, in relined fitted oak case, probably original, with some accessories including leather-covered Hawksley powder-flask with white metal charger, and single leather shot-belt with Sykes Patent sprung brass charger, the lid with W.A. Beckwith trade, the exterior with circular brass escutcheon. Other Notes: William Andrew Beckwith was apprenticed to Wattel Clark in 1785 and made free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1801. He was master of the Gunmakers' Company in 1808, 1814, 1825 and 1840.

A CASED .31 COLT LONDON 'MODEL 1849' FIVE-SHOT SINGLE-ACTION PERCUSSION POCKET REVOLVER, serial no. 8324, Circa 1855, 9 3/4in. overall, with blued 5in. octagonal sighted barrel marked 'ADDRESS. COL. COLT / LONDON', associated blued cylinder, case-hardened frame and hammer, one-piece walnut grips, trigger-guard retaining some original plated finish, case-hardened rammer, and much original finish to barrel, frame and rammer, matching numbers throughout with the exception of the cylinder, London proof marks, in original lined and fitted case with some accessories including Dixon powder-flask, the lid with directions for loading and cleaning with handwritten name 'WILLIAM S. CLARKE' along one side, the exterior with shaped brass escutcheon. Other Notes: This revolver was given to Tony in 1953 by his brother in law Benton Rowell. The revolver served as a constant reminder to Tony of the need for care when loading. The accidental loading of a chamber with modern nitro pistol powder caused it to rupture, hence the need for a replacement cylinder on an otherwise little used revolver.
