A CASED ENGRAVED LOW SERIAL NUMBER FIVE-SHOT PERCUSSION COLT POCKET REVOLVER, 4inch sighted octagonal barrel marked ADDRESS. COL: COLT LONDON. border and scroll engraved case colour hardened frame, the left side with engraved COLTS PATENT, good Stage Coach cylinder scene, the trigger guard and back strap retaining all of their original plated finish and finely scroll engraved, varnished wooden grips, serial no. 7 throughout, contained in its blue velvet lined mahogany case, complete with its JAMES DIXON & SONS COLTS POCKET FLASK with patent nozzle, blued COLTS PATENT bullet and ball mould, cleaning rod, bone nipple pot, COLT'S PATENT cap tin and key to the box, the inside of the lid with loading instructions. Originally purchased from the Sotheby's sale of firearms from the Vokes collection, (Vokes filters) 27th March 1952. This revolver is illustrated on page 238 of The Colt Engraving Book Volume I by R. L. Wilson and to the best of our knowledge is the second earliest known London Colt Pocket and the earliest known cased Colt Pocket. It bears no London Proof markings, not unusual if it were made to fulfil an Indian, African or General Overseas order. The gun itself is in very crisp condition with nice sharp scroll engraving to the colour hardened frame and plated back strap. This gun is also scarce for the presence of an engraved COLTS PATENT to the left side of the frame, as opposed to being stamped. The barrel retains good amounts of blued finish to the underside. The grips retain a good original varnish. The mould is blued and shows very little use apart from a few scratches below the sprue cutter. The flask is equally good with lacquer to the brass, blued spring and lacquer to the copper body with one small ding to the back. The case has one or two rust spots, the compartment lid has a crack and the loading label has some staining but over all is very good.
A SMALL COLLECTION OF COPPER POWDER AND LEATHER SHOT FLASKS, comprising an embossed Dixon, a further embossed flask, a Hawksley rifle flask with some lacquer, a worn leather covered Hawksley rifle flask, a worn Battie flask, a leather shot flask embossed with hung game and five further leather shot flasks.
