A REGENCY CARRARA MARBLE PEDESTAL PLINTH ATTRIBUTED TO THE CANOVA WORKSHOP FOR THOMAS HOPE CIRCA 1820-1830 With relief decoration in the round of three maenads with thyrsus and a man with wine flask, below characteristic band of squared Greek key band interspersed with flowerheads, stepped base,51.5cm high, top 29.5cm diameterFor an example of very similar Greek key banding please see the column support for "The Hope Venus", workshop of Antonio Canova circa 1822, now in the Leeds Art Gallery collection. This band pattern is also used at the top of the plinth base to Canova's Hercules and Lichas in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. The frieze design seems to be inspired by the second century marble frieze of the "Borghese Dancers", now in the Louvre.Condition Report: There are some marks, scratches, knocks, chips, and abrasions consistent with age and fairly heavy use. An Edwardian hallmarked silver hip flask of small proportions, the hinged swivel action cap above rounded rectangular body engraved with a crest and inscribed 'Virtutis Fortuna Comes', London 1909, 9.5cm, approx 2.14ozt/66g.Footnote: The motto is that of the 12/16th Hunter River Lancers, an army reserve unit based in Northern New South Wales, Australia. There are several other pieces of military inscribed silver from the same source in the sale and is therefore possibly connected.Additional InformationA few small dents and small creases to the body of the flask but no splits, a dent to the cap but the hinged action work well, still has the cork stopper. Surface tarnishing and toning throughout, makers mark very slightly obscured.

A Mughal carved ivory composite animal priming flask North India, second half of the 17th Centuryof curved form, in two sections with hinged brass lever to one side, carved in relief with two antelopes to the nozzle surrounded by leopards, a bird and further antelopes, the eyes of the antelope set with glass beads, the body engraved with panels containing leopards pursuing antelopes, the end with an antelope, an elephant and two further animals, with stand 23 cm. longFootnotes:This is one of a series of carved ivory priming flasks attributed to Mughal workshops of the 17th century. Comparable examples are preserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum (no. IS.382.1896), the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (no. 2009.1357) and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (nos. 32.25.2420 and 07.71). Despite their delicate construction and materials, these flasks were practical accompaniments to the imperial hunt, one of the most popular pastimes of the Mughal court, and were used to deposit priming powder into the pans of the matchlock muskets which were used for hunting.
