A good cased pair of 28 bore percussion duelling pistols by J W Edge, Manchester, 13½” overall, heavy deeply browned octagonal twist barrels 8¼” engraved “Manchester” in Gothic script and with rearsight on breech tangs; flat bolted locks with foliate engraved plates and hammers and “J W Edge” in Gothic script; nicely figured and polished halfstocks with deeply chequered butts, silver fore-end caps and barrel wedge plates (heavily tarnished), silver escutcheon engraved with initials, engraved steel trigger guards with pineapple finials, and horn tipped ramrods with concealed brass worms. Good Working Order and generally crisp Condition, (minor wear and bruising to stocks); in their fitted brass bound mahogany case with folding handle in lid, containing 3 way oval section copper and brass flask, 30 bore steel pincer ball mould, nipple key with pricker, loading/cleaning rod (brass attachments missing), two good old cap tins with printed labels, and another tin. In generally Very Good Condition (the case damaged where the lock has been forced). Plate 90

A cased pair of continental 42 bore percussion duelling pistols c 1860, 16” overall, browned octagonal twist barrels 10” with fine multigroove rifling, tangs with block rearsight; the back action locks and rounded hammers engraved with simple scrolled foliage, and with single set triggers; black stained wood halfstocks with shell carved fore-ends and chequered butts with flared and carved finials; mounts of engraved steel, including spurred trigger guards. Good Working Order and Condition, (one butt slightly chipped); in their close fitted brown velvet lined oil cloth covered case with brass corners and leather covered carrying handles, containing small white metal flask embossed with stylised bush, steel pincer ball mould, turnscrew/nipple key, circular brass cap dispenser, brass loading rod, cleaning rod, large ebony loading mallet and turned horn cap box. A very complete set (case worn externally, 2 brass corners detached but present, name plate missing from lid). Plate 92

A good cased pair of 28 bore officer’s flintlock holster pistols by Joseph Manton, 13½” overall, rifled octagonal twist barrels 8” with gold lines and touch holes, breeches with foliate engraving, the underside of the barrels with London provisional and definitive proofs and engraved with the initials “J.P”, the muzzles with swivel ramrods; flat bolted locks with rainproof pans and raised cams on the frizzen springs, plate engraved with fern tip borders and “Joseph Manton, London”, walnut halfstocks with silver barrel wedge plates and escutcheons and rounded chequered butts; steel mounts include engraved fore-end caps and engraved and shaped trigger guards with urn finials, containing single set triggers. Good Working Order and Condition (one tumbler screw head detached but present, the trigger guards well reblued); in their original green baize lined fitted brass bound mahogany case, with folding handle in the lid and with good trade label of “Joseph Manton, Gun Maker, Davies Street, Berkeley Square, London”, containing 28 bore steel pincer mould, 3 way copper and brass flask with screw base, and later turnscrew and cleaning rod. Good Condition (no key, small old split to lid). Plate 97
