A good pair of Irish double barrelled side by side 34 bore percussion travelling pistols, by Bowls of Cork, 8" overall, browned twist barrels 3½" signed on the top rib "Bowls, Cork" in old English script, the breeches blued and with two gold lines, with signed scroll engraved back action locks and hammers, walnut fullstocks with chequered butts, scroll engraved blued steel mounts, small engraved silver butt caps, oval silver escutcheon engraved with unicorn's head, motto "Virtute et Numine" over initials (indistinct) and brass tipped ebony ramrods. Good Working Order and very clean condition (extremely well refinished overall, part of one fore end replaced), in their refitted and relined oak case with circular escutcheon and a trade label of Wilkinson & Sons, Pall Mall, London, containing a 36 bore steel ball mould, brass mounted loading rod, Dixon powder flask (no spring), nipple key, turnscrew, pewter oil bottle, a cap tin, and key to the case. A Cizhou white-glazed moulded moon flask, Jin/Yuan dynasty, moulded from two halves, with an oval splayed foot, one side moulded with two flowerheads and tufts of grass, the other side with four flowers in similar size and three tufts of grass, two handles adhered on the upper side of shoulder, one with slip in creamy white, the other in greyish brown like the colour shown on the unglazed base, slim neck and everted rim, overall covered with cream slip and unglazed foot rim revealing the greyish body, good condition, normal wear and minor fritting. This includes a clear glass flask inscribed 'Thomas Brown, Nenthead, 1769' in the Ashmolean Museum (inv. no.WA1957.24.2.181), which is illustrated by James Rush, A Beilby Odyssey (1987), p.69, pl.29. Compare also to the earlier South Staffordshire polychrome enamelled opaque white flask depicting a similar scene, possibly by William Beilby working for John Haseldine, sold by Bonhams as part of the Kaplan Collection on 15 November 2017, lot 39.A celebrated set of Beilby enamelled opaque twist wine glasses, of which at least three are so far recorded, is decorated with similar wildfowling scenes. An example now in the Laing Art Gallery (inv. no.F6317) was sold by Sotheby's on 1 November 1982, lot 38 and is illustrated by L M Bickerton, Eighteenth Century English Drinking Glasses (1986), p.332, no.1079. Another was in the Hamilton Clements Collection, illustrated by Francis Buckley, A History of Old English Glass (1925), pl.XXXV and sold by Sotheby's on 15 May 1930, then again as part of the Henry Brown Collection on 14 November 1947, lot 255. A third from the Darell Thompson-Schwab Collection was sold by Bonhams on 30 November 2022, lot 139. An Edwardian silver flask and cover, of slightly tapered oval section, by W. & G. Neal, London 1901, 10.5cm high, together with two silver small hip flasks, Sheffield 1900 and Chester 1904, both 9.5cm high, 15oz overall. (3)Main flask is in good condition overall, the screw top and hinge all fine. It has engraved inscription to the top of the cover 'V.C.S March 1915'. Marks a bit worn but readable. Hip flasks both have some small dents and knocks but reasonably good overall. Both have engraved initials/monogram.
