Mortimer, London, Gun-Maker To His Majesty, Late 18th Century Expertly reconverted from percussion, with rebrowned twist octagonal sighted barrels each signed in full in capitals along the top flat and engraved with a line of beadwork at the rear, border engraved tangs each fitted with a back-sight and decorated with a martial trophy and foliage, border engraved flat bevelled detented locks each with re-engraved signature and decorated with a martial trophy on the stepped tail, engraved safety-catches (one repaired), figured full stocks (fore-ends each with small splits at the muzzle) one with some bruising and loss of lacquer on the side-flat) each with chequered rounded butt, blued steel mounts (some loss of finish) comprising trigger-guards in the French fashion each with double pineapple finial and decorated with a large flower-head on the bow, turned ramrod-pipes, adjustable set triggers, and original ramrod (the other replaced) with iron worm and threaded powder-measure (two barrel-bolts broken): in their contemporary oak case (one compartment lid replaced) fitted and lined in dark brown velvet with some accessories including three-way powder-flask, the body covered in black leather (minor old damage), the interior of the lid with rare maker's illustrated trade label for Garnet Terry, the exterior of the lid (one corner chipped, minor old splits) with replacement brass carrying handle of Chippendale form, London proof marks and Mortimer's barrelsmith's mark 24.7 cm. barrels Footnotes: Harvey Walklate 1 Mortimer (1753-1819) was appointed Gunmaker to George III in 1783.
