A pair of miniature pinfire pistols, circa 1860, is in the collection of the V&A London, given by HM Queen Mary, accession number M.128-1939, M.129-1939. Also, in the V&A, is a very early pistol-shaped pendant, circa 1525-30, reputedly given to Anne Boleyn by Henry VIII, on loan from a private collection, accession number LOAN:MET ANON.1-1984.Miniature weapons, model cannons and intricate caskets with mechanically complex locks were made from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Such masterpieces, probably made to impress clients, often ended up as prized collectibles in cabinets of curiosities. They were also worn on the body along with other hanging jewels. This pair of percussion cap miniature pistols date to the mid-19th century and were probably made in Liege, one of the most productive centres for firearms of all sorts for many centuries. The powder-flask and tongs were most likely from the same source. Full-size versions are carried in the pocket and are referred to as pocket pistols. For further information, please see: John S. Cooper, Belgian Miniature Firearms Of The Nineteenth Century, 1996Although unsigned, this bangle is cased by Phillips Brothers, the prominent and inventive British jeweller working in the fashionable revivalist style. The firm produced jewels in ancient Greek, Roman, Scandinavian, Byzantine, Renaissance, Assyrian, Indian and Egyptian taste as well as mounting engraved gems for customers in the tradition of 19th century Italian jewellers. It was most probably a unique commission, full of meaning and symbolism for the wearer and was perhaps an elaborate love token, loaded with emotion. Although the pistols may be fired, they were not meant to be!For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
