DERMOT, DUBLIN, early 19th century, 16in. overall, with signed browned twist octagonal barrels each with silver fore-sight, case-hardened patent breeches each with platinum-lined touch-hole and inlaid with four platinum lines, foliate engraved tangs each incorporating the rear-sight, signed flat bevelled engraved bolted locks (one cock and steel replaced, the other top-jaw and jaw screw replaced) each with stepped tail, roller and silver-lined rain-proof pan, figured walnut half-stocks each with chequered butt, engraved silver mounts including spurred trigger-guards each with foliate finial and decorated on the bow with a trophy, flat-bottomed butts each with a band of silver engraved with running foliage and an oval pommel engraved with foliage, set triggers, silver fore-end caps each engraved with a sunburst, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, escutcheons each engraved with a crest and initials, and original ramrods, one with worm, the other with powder-measure, both pistols re-coloured, in fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with some accessories including brass-mounted leather-covered three-way flask, the lid with brass circular escutcheon and flush-fitting carrying handle.
A FINE CASED 80-BORE TRANTER PATENT (4TH MODEL) FIVE-SHOT DOUBLE-ACTION PERCUSSION REVOLVER RETAILED BY ALFRED CLAYTON, SOUTHAMPTON, serial no. 9170T, circa 1856, 9 1/2in. overall, with scroll engraved blued barrel and frame, the top-strap engraved 'A. Clayton. High St. Southampton', bright scroll engraved cylinder and Tranter Patent rammer, blued safety-stop, arbor-pin and arbour-pin catch, scroll engraved blued trigger-guard and pommel, finely chequered walnut butt, and retaining nearly all its original finish throughout, London proof marks, in original fitted mahogany case lined in blue baize with accessories comprising brass bullet-mould, Dixon pistol-flask and oil bottle, loading/cleaning rod, ebony-handled turnscrew and nipple-wrench, five spare nipples, gilt bullet tin, a japanned tin of Tranter's patent lubricating composition, and a japanned tin of Eley Bros pistol caps made exclusively for Tranter's revolvers, the lid of the case with Alfred Clayton trade label, the exterior with circular brass escutcheon. Footnote: Alfred Clayton is recorded as trading in Southampton between 1855 and 1867.
