A CASED 50 BORE SIX-SHOT PERCUSSION PEPPERBOX REVOLVER BY GEO. & JNO. DEANE, 30 KING WILLIAM ST, LONDON BRIDGE, CIRCA 1846-51 with scroll-engraved case-hardened fluted barrel group, case-hardened self-cocking action (defective), signed within a frame of scrollwork on the left, and finely engraved with a panel of scrollwork on the right, engraved case-hardened bar-hammer, engraved sliding safety-catch, engraved trigger-guard, finely chequered walnut butt fitted with scroll-engraved butt-cap with trap, vacant silver escutcheon, and retaining traces of original finish throughout: in its original brass-bound mahogany fitted case lined in green baize, the lid applied with trade label for 30 King William Street (one small tear), and complete with copper Sykes patent flask and nipple key 22.5cm; 8 7/8in George and John Deane were appointed gunmakers to Prince Albert in 1848 and exhibited an electroplated silver revolving pistol at the Great Exhibition in 1851. They were succeeded at the same address by Deane Adams & Deane. See H.L. Blackmore 1986, p.80.
**A RARE CASED PAIR OF FRENCH 40 BORE PERCUSSION RIFLED PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS WITH ENCLOSED LOCKS BY LE PAGE ARQER DU ROI, NO. 3425 DATED 1833 with octagonal swamped sighted barrels signed in gold between leafy fronds and numbered `1` and `2` respectively, stamped with the barrelsmith`s mark of Nicholas Noël Boutet (Neue Støckel 100) beneath and with the serial number, case-hardened breeches inlaid with platinum lines, pierced platinum plugs, engraved case-hardened breech tangs stamped inside with the serial numbers and the dates, numbered in gold en suite with the barrels, decorated with pairs of fronds and fitted with standing back-sights, side-hammer actions enclosed within the stock and fitted with engraved case-hardened side-hammers, figured walnut half-stocks carved with a shell design over the fore-ends, and panels of chequering over the butts, the latter fitted with ebony caps carved with laurel fruit and foliage (one small chip), engraved case-hardened spurred trigger-guards and trigger-plates, silver barrel bolt escutcheons, and no provision for a ramrod: in their original brass-bound fitted case veneered in rosewood on the outside and lined with plum velvet (the veneer cracked, the lining faded and with areas of wear), complete with its accessories including brass powder-flask, and numbered bullet mould, 37.5cm; 14 3/4in The enclosed lock and the style of engraving is very similar to the work of Louis Perrin Lepage recorded in Vienna and Paris circa 1823-65. Perrin-Lepage exhibited in the Paris exhibition of 1823 and is recorded working from 1830 at 7 rue de l` Echelle. He married Henry Lepage`s daughter and was granted a patent together with his brother-in-law for breech-loading pistols in 1832.
A FINE PAIR OF CASED 50 BORE BOHEMIAN PERCUSSION RIFLED TARGET PISTOLS BY ANTON VINCENT LEBEDA A PRAGUE, MID-19TH CENTURY with swamped octagonal twist sighted barrels rifled with eighteen narrow grooves, signed `A: V: Lebeda a Prague` between a pair of delicate scrolls, and inscribed `Damas` and `Turc` on each side all in gold, inlaid with a gold band around the muzzle, and with a line and a pattern of key ornament in gold at the breech, engraved case-hardened recessed breeches inlaid with platinum lines, numbered `1` and `2` respectively in gold, pierced platinum plugs, engraved case-hardened gilt breech tangs numbered en suite with the breeches and fitted with adjustable back-sights, decorated with a horse and a hound respectively, engraved case-hardened flush-fitting signed and numbered locks decorated with differing lancer scenes and enriched with gold highlights, engraved and gilt case-hardened hammers en suite with the locks, double set triggers, highly figured walnut half-stocks carved with scrolls over the fore-ends, the butts each carved with finely chequered panels and scrolls of foliage top and bottom, carved pommels fitted with bands of contrasting ebony and brass, engraved blued and gilt steel mounts comprising spurred trigger-guards decorated with differing horses, engraved blued trigger-plates, butt-caps decorated with a mounted Turk before a castle, and a mounted rider schooling horses, German silver escutcheons engraved with the owner`s initial `S` beneath a coronet of a Count or an Earl permitted, engraved German silver barrel bolt escutcheons, no provision for a ramrod, and in untouched condition throughout (areas of wear): in their original fitted case veneered in rosewood and bound with German silver (the veneer and German silver with losses, the lid warped), the inside lined in purple velvet (faded), and complete with almost their full complement of accessories including turn-screw, nipple wrench, signed mother-of-pearl and German silver powder-flask, rammer and bullet mould (oil bottle missing) 40cm; 15 3/4in (2) Anton Vincent Lebeda is recorded in Prague circa 1797-1857. He worked in Germany and Vienna, including a period with Johann Contriner. He became Hofbüchsenmacher in 1852 and made twelve guns, six double rifles and three single rifles for the Emperor Franz Josef I.

A FINE CASED PAIR OF 40 BORE PERCUSSION RIFLED DUELLING PISTOLS BY JOHN MANTON & SON, NO. 9129 FOR 1822 with scratch rifled browned twist octagonal barrels signed in script on the top flat, silver fore-sights, engraved case-hardened breeches fitted with standing back-sights, platinum plugs and decorated with a palmette, engraved case-hardened breech tangs decorated with scrolls, engraved case-hardened flush-fitting locks signed `John Manton & Son patent`, decorated with scrolls and border ornament, fitted with blued bolt safety-catches and hammers decorated en suite (one hammer an early working replacement), blued set triggers, figured walnut half-stocks, chequered butts, scroll-engraved blued steel mounts comprising numbered trigger-guards with stylised pineapple finials, pear-shaped butt-caps, and a pair of ramrod-pipes, vacant silver escutcheons, silver barrel bolt escutcheons, horn fore-end caps, each with its original brass-tipped ramrod, and much original finish throughout: in original fitted mahogany case, the outside with brass flush-fitted carrying handle, the interior lined in green baize and with trade label for No. 6 Dover Street, (the lining with minor wear and light moth damage, label with small tears, compartment lids missing), and complete with accessories including oil bottle, three-way flask, nipple key, mallet and one tampion 38cm; 15in Provenance Sotheby`s London, 25th July 1991, lot 93 Literature P. A. Scott-Edeson, Dating the Firearms of John Manton and John Manton & Son: 1789-1834, 2000, p.131. These pistols are notably early in their adoption of the percussion system (op. cit).

A RARE CASED 40 BORE SILVER-MOUNTED SINGLE-TRIGGER OVER AND UNDER FLINTLOCK PISTOL, BY JOSEPH EGG, LONDON SILVER MARKS FOR 1814 with blued octagonal barrels (light pitting) signed in gold on the top and bottom flats, silver bead fore-sight, engraved breeches, the upper inlaid with a platinum line, platinum-lined vents, engraved breech tang, signed engraved case-hardened external actions fitted with engraved `French` cocks, blued mainsprings, bolt safety-catches, rollers and rainproof pans (one top-jaw an early replacement), figured walnut butt cut with chequering, silver mounts comprising trigger-guard decorated with border ornament, spurred pommel engraved and gilt with the owner`s coat-of-arms within a foliate frame, gold escutcheon engraved with the owner`s crest, traces of original finish, and steel ramrod with chequered tip carried on the left of the barrels: in a later fitted mahogany case lined in green baize, complete with a contemporary three-way flask with later red leather covering 16cm; 6 1/4in Provenance: Christie`s South Kensington, 23rd May 1990, lot 277 Field Marshall Sir Francis Festing William Keith Neal The arms and crest are those of Baring, probably Sir Francis Thornhill Baring. Sir Francis Thornhill Baring, 3rd Baronet was born in 1796. He was a Member of Parliament for Portsmouth from 1826 to 1865, and was Chancellor of the Exchequer and First Lord of the Admiralty.
A Persian Nautilus Shell and Mother ofPearl powder flask, in the Portuguese Colonial style, possibly 17th century, the top decorated with a mother of pearl stylized lotus leaf pattern, above a band of stylized flower heads, body formed of a single abalone shell, applied metal mounts and loop handle, shell with lustre quality to surface, height 14 cm. Note: for type, see Skelton, Heritage, p.136, no.443 &444. Two similar examples are in the David Collection Copenhagen, also see Ashmolean Museum Oxford.

A fine pair of percussion target or duelling pistols by John Blisset, 321 High Holborn, London, the 38 bore 8 1/4in. octagonal damascus barrels signed along the flats with further inscription "Maker to H.R.H. The Duke of Sussex", fitted blade foresights and notch rear sight, the breeches with platinum safety plugs, sliding safety catches, dolphin hammers and scroll engraved lock plates and trays, the walnut stocks with scrolling blued trigger guards and chequered grips, complete with ramrods and steel butt caps, 14 1/2in. long overall; contained in their original mahogany case with baize-lined interior and makers label, including the following accessories: Williams Davies 35 bore pincer bullet mould; Dixon & Sons pewter oil bottle; steel patch punch; ebony handled nipple key with screw in pricker; a copper and brass mounted powder flask; rosewood hammer; rosewood cleaning rod with separate brass jag; small ivory box containing two spare nipples; an ivory handled brush and a J. A cased 80-bore five shot Tranter Patent double trigger percussion revolver, No 10123T, the blued frame with engraved decoration, chequered butt and engraved steel cap, 9 1/2in. long overall, in fitted oak case complete with brass 80 bore Tranters bullet mould, Dixon & Son`s copper and brass powder flask, turn key and barrel cleaner, two Tranter`s tins and an F. Joyce cap tin.

A reproduction of a rare powder flask, the original by James Dixon & Son, `Hunting We Will Go`, the patinated copper body embossed with allegorical scene of a hunters prowess, trees part the flask into four scenes each decorated differently, the first with a mother and child asleep above a hunter shooting waterfowl, the second with a mother and child in a vineyard as hunter aims at a fleeing fox and a rabbit on its hind legs, next is the mother and child seated above the hunter taking aim at fleeing boar, and lastly the mother and child sleeps above the hunter blowing his horn in victory of felling a stag, (557) (losses and later additions).
