American School 'Termos' flask, circa 1940 based on the SC Johnson Research Tower, Wisconsin chrome plated with ebonised handled 27.5cm high. Note: The SC Johnson headquarters were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Research Tower, started in 1944, was finally opened in 1950. They were designated as National Historic Landmarks in 1976. Frank Lloyd Wright also designed all the furniture for the building. Provenance: Purchased from Fifty/50 Gallery, New York, circa 1985.

London' on the top flats, fitted with brass bead foresights, struck with proof marks and the serial numbers beneath, scroll-engraved case-hardened numbered breeches with platinum lines and pierced platinum plugs, scroll-engraved case-hardened breech tangs incorporating grooved back-sights, border and foliate scroll-engraved flush-fitting signed case-hardened locks fitted with engraved bolt safety-catches, engraved case-hardened hammers en suite, highly figured varnished walnut full stocks with chequered grips, border and foliate scroll-engraved blued trigger-guards engraved with the serial number "189" on the straps, blued triggers and blued trigger-plates, vacant rectangular silver escutcheons, silver barrel bolt escutcheons, blued barrel bolts, ramrod stirrups and pipes with some blued finish, swivel ramrods, each in very good, probably unfired, condition: in original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize (light wear), the lid fitted with shaped flush-fitting rectangular brass escutcheon incorporating carrying handle, and closed by side catches, the interior with Westley Richards trade label (small indentations), lightly inscribed '189' and 'Year 1840' in pencil on the inside of the lid border, complete with accessories including German silver three-way flask by James Dixon & Sons, oil bottle by the same, 17 bore blued steel bullet mould stamped 'Westley Richards London', 'No. 17' and 'WD' for William Davis, associated turnscrew with ebony handle, and ebony cleaning and loading rod with round horn knob and worm, and some patches and balls 23.0 cm; 9 in barrels Provenance Peter Wainwright Collection These pistols are sold together with an Authentication Certificate from Westley Richards, a copy of The Company's letter to the owner recording that 189 were 'entered into our ledgers as a pair of 16g Holster pistols. The pistols had 9" barrels and were completed for stock on November 30th 1840', and a copy of the relevant extract from The Company's ledgers. Westley Richards traded at 170 New Bond Street from 1815 until 1917, with William Bishop, 'The Bishop of Bond Street', as their agent from 1815-71. The present pistols were made in the same year that Westley Richards were awarded a Royal Warrant as Gunmakers to Prince Albert.

A CASED PAIR OF 20 BORE SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK DUELLING PISTOLS BY JAMES (1) BARBAR, LONDON, 1758, MAKER'S MARK OF JEREMIAH ASHLEY with swamped barrels fitted with moulded silver fore-sights, the breeches finely chiselled and gilt with rococo ornament and signed within a border-engraved frame ahead of a shell, struck with London view and proof marks and the barrelsmith's mark, the letters IB beneath a mullet, on the left, gold-lined vents, finely engraved grooved tangs, stepped locks of circa 1830 signed 'Wheeler', fitted with rainproof pans, 'French' cocks, rollers and bolt safety-catches, decorated with bouquets and sunbursts, figured walnut full stocks profusley inlaid with silver wire scrolls over their entire surface (small losses), finely carved with delicate leafy tendrils and a shell about the tangs, full silver mounts cast and chased with rococo designs in low relief, comprising openwork sideplates involving large flowerheads, tendrils and a central shell, trigger-guards with shell terminals beneath a flowerhead canopy, each with a large rococo flowerhead on a punched ground on the bow, engraved spurred pommels with grotesque mask caps, escutcheons engraved wih the owner's crest, a pair of ramrod-pipes, and silver-tipped ramrods with iron worms, probably the original: in early fitted mahogany case lined in green baize (light wear, compartment lids replaced, one small chip), complete with some accessories including red leather-covered three-way flask, bullet mould and rammer, together with two modern detached flintlocks inscribed 'Barbar', the trigger-guards each engraved 368-20-4414 28.2 cm; 11 1/8 in barrels Provenance The John A. Williams Collection of English Pistols, sold Sotheby's, 22nd May 1979, lot 79 James Barbar, son of Lewis Barbar, presented his mark (cited above) on the death of the latter in 1740. He became Gentleman Armourer to George II in 1741, a post he held until 1762, and was Furbisher at Hampton Court until 1767. The crest is that of Morrice.
