A Victorian leather cased travelling tea set, comprising; two silver spoons, London 1876 and a silver lid to one glass jar, London 1873, (probably replacements), the remaining items, being silver plated, including a flask detailed Spirits of Wine and two mugs, having loop shaped ivory handles.
Rhodian 2nd half of the 6th cent. B.C.. Clay. L. 15.7 cm Formed of buff clay, this askos (flask) is in the shape of a siren - a mythological hybrid creature combining the head and upper torso of a young woman and the body of a bird. In this case, the bird body approximates the shape of a pigeon or dove. The spout is located on the crown of the female head, mimicking the form of a polos headdress. Long tresses of plaited hair fall over the shoulders and breasts. Condition: Lacunae restored, head original. Formerly priv. coll. of the art dealer Marcel Liatowitsch, Basel, acquired before 2000.
