J. PURDEY. A FINE CASED 10-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 2184, with 28in. browned twist polygonal barrel with octagonal breech-section signed 'J. PURDEY. NO. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON' (some pitting to underside and sides of breech-section), bead fore-sight, rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves each with platinum-inlaid centre-line and calibrated to 200 yards, case- hardened border engraved recessed patent breech inlaid with two platinum lines and with pierced platinum plug, case-hardened tang engraved with scrollwork and a tiger-mask, case-hardened bolted detented lock engraved with scrollwork and a scene involving a recumbent red stag, black lacquered walnut half-stock with raised cheek -piece, chequered grip and fore-end, set trigger, scroll engraved blued iron mounts including butt-plate decorated with a head and cape of a red stag, hinged patchbox-cover with a scene involving a boar being chased down by two hounds, and pistolgrip trigger-guard decorated with a tiger on the bow, dark horn fore-end cap, sling mounts, horn-tipped ramrod, and much original finish throughout, London proof marks, barrelsmith's mark 'JP', in original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with accessories including iron pincer-type bullet mould, Sykes silver- plated powder-flask engraved with a crest and the motto 'Persevere', wad-cuter and loading / cleaning rod, the lid with J. Purdey trade label, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle and circular brass escutcheon. Literature: L. Patrick Unsworth, The Early Purdeys, p. 83 & 148. Other Notes: The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was sold in July 1832 to the Hon. A Craven for the sum of £39. 18. 0. Unsworth notes that this is described as a "Large Rifle". He also notes that the records indicate a barrel length of 30in. which is confirmed by the Dimensions Book, although this also lists the calibre as 16-bore. However the Cash Ledgers record the rifle as a 10-bore. Perhaps this descrepency in calibre between the two record books could also go some way to account for the fact the current barrel length of 28in., which appears to be original, is also in conflict with the Dimensions Book.

A CASED 54-BORE KERR'S PATENT FIVE-SHOT DOUBLE-ACTION PERCUSSION REVOLVER, serial no. 417, with 5 3/4in. octagonal sighted barrel signed 'LONDON', serial numbered cylinder, frame engraved 'KERR'S PATENT 417' and stamped 'LONDON ARMOURY', back-action lock signed 'LONDON ARMOURY BERMONDSEY' and retaining traces of original blued finish (self-cocking mechanism at fault), chequered walnut butt (chequering worn), and rammer (some light pitting and cleaned bright throughout), London proof marks, in fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with accessories including brass bullet mould and Hawksley pistol-flask, the lid with Kerr Patent label with directions for loading and cleaning (possibly pasted over an earlier label), the exterior with circular brass escutcheon.

A FINE CASED FRENCH 25-BORE DOUBLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION TRAVELLING PISTOL, 15.5cm. fine damascus twist sighted barrels, case-hardened breeches engraved with foliage on the rib between, border and scroll engraved case-hardened long tang and back-action locks, figured walnut half-stock carved with a band of foliage at the pommel, scroll engraved case-hardened mounts including trigger-guard and pommel, white metal barrel-bolt escutcheons, original iron ramrod, and much original finish throughout, St. Etienne proof, in original close-fitted brass-bound mahogany case lined in green leather with gilt borders, with accessories comprising iron bullet mould, brass-mounted copper pistol-flask with adjustable nozzle and body in the form of a pineapple, loading mallet, turnscrew and wooden cap box, the lid with padded green baize lining, the exterior with brass carrying handle and shield-shaped brass escutcheon.

A FINE CASED PAIR OF 22-BORE PERCUSSION DUELLING PISTOLS SIGNED LANCASTER, LONDON, circa 1840, with 9 3/4in. rebrowned twist barrels each signed 'BOND ST. LONDON', case-hardened patent breeches each engraved with scrollwork and with two gold-inlaid lines and pierced platinum plug, case-hardened scroll engraved tangs each incorporating the rear-sight, case-hardened scroll engraved detented bolted locks each signed 'LANCASTER', well figured walnut half-stocks each with chequered butt with flat pommel (one with small chip in front of lock), set triggers, blued iron mounts including spurred trigger-guards each with stylised pineapple finial, silver escutcheon, barrel-bolt escutcheons and fore-end caps, original ramrods each with worm, and much original finish, London proof marks, in relined fitted brass-bound mahogany case with accessories including Dixon brass-mounted copper three-way pistol-flask, iron pincer-type bullet mould and loading rod with worm, the exterior with shaped brass escutcheon incorporating a flush-fitting carrying handle.

J. FENTON, LONDON. A FINE CASED PAIR OF 40-BORE PERCUSSION DUELLING TARGET PISTOLS, circa 1825-30, with 10in. browned twist rifled octagonal barrels signed 'I. FENTON. LONDON' in gold towards the breech, silver fore-sights, case-hardened recessed patent breeches (one with some pitting around the nipple) each engraved with scrollwork and a trophy, case-hardened tangs each incorporating the rear-sight and engraved with foliage and a further trophy, case-hardened flat bevelled bolted detented locks each signed 'J. FENTON' and profusely engraved with scrollwork, figured walnut half-stocks each with chequered flattened fish- tail butt, set triggers, engraved blued trigger-guards, case-hardened trigger-plates each with pineapple finial, silver escutcheon and barrel-bolt escutcheons, silver fore-end caps each engraved with a spray of foliage, and original brass-mounted ramrods, one with worm, and much original finish, London proof mark, in fitted mahogany case (probably original) lined in green baize with accessories including brass-mounted copper three-way pistol-flask, iron pincer-type bullet mould and turnscrew set, the lid with trade label of Chas. Mc.Loughlin, Cheltenham (who probably retailed the pistols during their working life), the exterior with circular brass escutcheon.

REILLY & CO..A CASED 80-BORE BUTT-RESERVOIR AIR CANE, with 21 1/4in. smoothbore barrel with 140-bore brass rifled insert, the shaft with black painted finish, button trigger and front and rear sights, brass muzzle-cap with brass-tipped wooden ramrod, black leather covered shotgun-butt shaped reservoir, in original fitted brass-cornered mahogany case with accessories including stirrup-pump, Sykes 'Extra' leather shot-flask, reproduction cocking-key and glass oil bottle, the lid with E.M.
