A Chinese Moon flask shaped vase decorated with polychrome panels of traditional scenes, surrounded by different coloured dragons in blue orange and red, flying through the clouds, 2 dragon 'handles' in relief in reds and golds, seal mark to base surrounded by polychrome decoration, height 36.5cm. The vase is in good condition, with some minor loss to handle on one side.
A BLUE AND WHITE ‘MAGPIE AND PRUNUS’ PORCELAIN PILGRIM FLASK OR MOON FLASK, BIANHUChina, Yongle style, 20th centuryThe gourd of round shape with a flat base and two half circled handles linking the shoulder to the tubular neck. Finely painted in blue shades with a Ming style ‘heap and pile’ effect. The decoration depicts magpies amidst plum tree blossomed branches as well as. A further geometrical pattern or band of foliage scrolls underlines the foot.H: 25 cmNotes:1. The form of this gourd is an adaptation of a much earlier foreign vessel inspired from leather bags or pilgrim bottles. This shape first appeared in Chinese ceramic production during the Han and Tang periods;2. One can say ‘There is a happy magpie on the tip of the plum branch’, lit. “Xi Shang Mei Shao” (喜上梅稍) which soundd exactly like ‘Xi Shang Mei Shao’ (喜上眉稍) lit. ‘Happiness up to one's eyebrows’;3. This flask dating to the 20th century would have been made after renowned related models dating to the Yongle period, such as that preserved in the Sir David Percival Foundation and now exhibited at the British Museum, London, The United Kingdom, and that preserved at the Shanghai Museum of Fine Arts, China.4. The above-mentioned vases have been published and illustrated in the series of books ‘Porcelain of the National Palace Museum’, Cafa Company Limited, Hong Kong, 1961-1969, ‘Blue and White Ware of the Ming Dynasty Book 1’, p. 58, pl. 9 and p. 60, pl. 10.ESTIMATE UPON REQUEST Condition Report: Condition report: A long firing crack to the base going to one side, identical to one of the original gourd after which this vase would have been made.

Circa 100-300 AD An elegant ancient glass flask blown into a pale green colour. The vessel features a globular body, an elongated, cylindrical neck, leading to a wide, flaring rim. Twelve 19th century fairings to include 'The attentive maid', 'The broken hoop', 'The wedding night', 'The Welsh tea party', 'Kiss me quick' and 'Oyster Day''The attentive maid' – a small match-head sized chip to underside of left-hand front base, historic firing 1.5cm crack vertically to green skirt, some paint rubbing and loss and probable female head away and re-affixed with restoration and new colours etc.; 'The Welsh tea party' – some gilt rubbing to plinth base, paint loss to back of one hat otherwise original condition; 'Now ma-am say when' - a 1cm arch-shaped flat piece of porcelain away from the end of the title, small match-head sized chip away to underside of plinth base (rear left) otherwise seemingly in original condition; 'The girls of the period' - female with blue dress paint rubbing / losses and half of right-hand handlebar missing, some further paint rubbing commensurate with age otherwise looks pretty original; 'If old age could' - some kiln grit in glaze otherwise good; ‘Cancan’ – some minor gilt rubbing otherwise OK; ‘Three o’clock in the morning’ – very minor flat chip away to underside plinth base (rear right), some minor paint rubbing and loss otherwise good condition; ‘Open your mouth and shut your eyes’ – figure in blue jacket raised hand some glazing away probable restoration to object in boy’s mouth (different colour), restoration also to boy’s right hand leg; ‘Oyster Day’ – restoration to left-hand standing female right hand and arm, small restoration to top of right-hand fence support as visible from back, some minor paint rubbing; ‘Kiss me quick’ – broken neck to flask on tray, minor firing crack to left of female’s shoe, some paint rubbing otherwise OK; ‘The wedding night’ – female head completely away and re-affixed and coloured out, new colour on back of neck/shoulders also; ‘The broken hoop’ – taller figure with restoration and later colour to both legs. To a certain degree there are mostly minor paint losses to some of the fairings.

AN EDWARDIAN SILVER HIP FLASK, by James Dixon & Sons Ltd, Sheffield 1904, of plain rectangular form, shaped for the pocket, with hinged twist cover, removable cup to the base. 9.5cm high, 3.3 troy ouncesCONDITION REPORTFull set of marks clear and well struck to base of cup, second full set to front of flask lightly rubbed. Stands upright, does not rock. Detachable cup to base gilded to interior. Small dent to shoulder corner, a second smaller bruise approx. 1cm lower down same edge. Cover retains original cork seal - tested with water, small amount of leakage. Light surface marks and scratches throughout commensurate with age and use
A VICTORIAN SILVER SCENT FLASK, by Sampson Mordan II, London 1884, of tapering cylindrical form, engraved with children in rustic landscape setting, in the style of Kate Greenaway. 14cm long, 1.1 troy ouncesKate Greenaway (or Catherine Greenaway) (1846-1901) was a Victorian children’s book illustrator and writer. Daughter of a successful draftsman and wood engraver, she studied graphic design and art between 1858 and 1869. Her first book “Under the Window” was an instant best seller and brought her immediate fame and was followed by numerous highly successful publications. At the same time as her writing career, she excelled as a watercolourist, working with illustrators Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott. Her distinctive old fashioned style depicting children and young ladies dressed in early 19th Century costume in quaint settings, a style of grace and charm that transformed the children’s book market, her talent described by Walter Crane as “captivating the public in a remarkable way”.CONDITION REPORTMarks are slightly rubbed but legible. Struck to the lid and to the body (maker's mark struck twice to the body). Top screws on and off well but there are two dents to the bulbous area. Cork inside the lid intact. 1.1 troy ounces. Good definition to the engraving.
