A Victorian Ebonised Dressing Case, containing silver gilt fittings, maker`s mark JH (probably John Harris), London 1851-52, retailed by W West, Manufacturer to Her Majesty, Prince Albert & The Royal Family No.1 St James`s Street, for George Cadogan, 3rd Earl Cadogan, the brass edged plain rectangular case with the Earl`s monogram centred on the lid, jewellery drawer to the fascia, revealing a blue velvet lined interior with lift-out tray containing twelve deep cut glass vessels, including those for powder, toothbrush, ink, scent and a cylindrical beaker (9cm), also utensils including two scissors, propelling pen/pencil, and a monogramed ivory hand mirror beneath the lid, each with foliate engraved detail around the Earl`s monogram within a circlet of cabochon turquoise stones, the case with Bramah locks and retailer`s plaque, original key with bone fob inscribed Lord Frederick Cambridge, 37cm by 27cm by 20.5cm Admiral George Cadogan was a prominent British Royal Navy officer and politician of the mid-nineteenth century who first gained notoriety for his service in the Adriatic campaign of the French Napoleonic Wars in command of HMS Havannah. One 9cm circular jar with large chip on foot, the other has tiny chips to the upper shoulder. One of the pair of rectangular boxes with bad crack right through and bad angle crack, the other with serious angle chips. Of the pair of scent bottles - both have general tiny chips here and there throughout, and several `dings` (ie small bruises) to the walls. One has a chipped internal stopper. The whisky flask with bad crack in shoulder running right down body through wall and internal stopper cracked. Small circular jar with one turquoise cabochon smaller than the others and faded, and one other similar. Tiny nick in the silver gilt cover on rim. Button hook reglued at the ferrule. Propelling tongue scraper possibly foreshortened. Utensil tray scruffy. Velvet degraded and may have been splashed with perfume. The bottom drawer is now missing the ratcheted writing surface, the brackets may be slightly damaged on one side, and the wooden moulding holding in the sliding mechanism is also slightly broken and piece not retained. Blotter pad bent on one corner severely and very scruffy on another. The case itself is veneered and has drying cracks throughout. General scratches and wear and tear to the angles. Front right basal cracks. Lower fascia drawer cracked. Please note there are numerous items of complex manufacture - this condition reports attempts to describe the majority of faults, but this is not necessary comprehensive and other small faults may exist. 290513
