A gentleman's walking stick made up of shark vertebrae, length 86cm, entered for sale by direct descendants of Thomas Newland Rosser (1857-1935), dockmaster at Bute Docks (later the Cardiff Railway Company). He was apprenticed in 1872, gained his master's certificate in 1880, in 1885 he was appointed deputy dockmaster and in 1896 dockmaster. His father was also a pilot in Cardiff, having been so for around 40 years. Thomas Newland Rosser hosted Captain Scott and the Terra Nova before setting off on their Antarctic expedition. He was also present at two visits of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert III
An early 18th century style walnut and brass portable stick barometer after Daniel Quare, the silvered dial with two vernier scale pointers adjusted by rack and pinion by the urn finials, with floral engraved decoration, the stop fluted stem above a spiral twist base and on four folding supports decorated with swags and masks, mid-20th century, 101.8cm high. Provenance: The Collection of Sir Jeremy Lever.
A George V swagger stick, the gilt metal handle with twin tiger's eyes and inscribed 'C. D. XMAS 1916', with a bamboo shaft, together with a George V ebonised cane with a 9ct gold handle and a late Victorian treen walking cane with a ball handle and a white metal ferrule inscribed 'E.T.H. from H.R.H. 1893', 93cm long (max). A late 18thC Derby porcelain chamber stick base modelled as a putto, seated on a bough with flowers, on a rococo scroll base, with later candleholder, 19cm high, together with a German 20thC porcelain figure group of two children with flowers, raised on an oval base, 13cm long, and two Continental porcelain lace figures. λ An early Victorian Scottish mahogany stick barometer by A. Abraham of Glasgow, with an arched ivory dial signed 'A.ABRAHAM & CO. GLASGOW', with an adjustable vernier scale, the flame veneered case with a moulded edge, the back with a handwritten paper label inscribed 'Captain Which', 91.5cm long. Provenance: The Collection of Sir Jeremy Lever.
Award # 16464. Type 1, variation 3, on rectangular suspension, without stick-pin. Comes with original letter from archives of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. Awarded to Captain Isayans O.A. (of Armenian origin), 5th Shock Army. In combat near Dmitrievka village, Captain Isayans, leading the battalion provided a clever stroke of tactics in capturing the road, cutting off the enemy’s path and ultimately capturing 6 vehicles and other facilities. Wounded in the arm, comrade Isayants only left the battlefield after the fight was over. Received his award in July of 1944, by decree of March 8 th, 1944. Condition: Insignificant enamel chipping, otherwise Very fine
