Lot 608

A Chinoiserie decorated stick barometerIn the manner of Daniel Quare, Early 18th Century and later The silvered scale with two verniers, set by the brass finials above, tapering column and spiral twist base, losses to decoration and replacement97cm high Condition Report The lacquer decoration work has flaked off in vertical narrow sections all over the tapered trunk section. Is this perhaps due to the wood shrinkage? The spiral twist section has traces of black lacquer and gilt and is worn off on the high sections showing the wood below (walnut or mahogany?). The cistern is lacquered and has similar degrading as well as some worm holes. The back of the cistern has a flattened edge to sit against the wall. The two brass rings on the trunk are well turned and deeply patinated. The two side panels of the pediment appear to have a later black lacquer application. With this later lacquer, it is very difficult to judge if the pediment sides and base are original, hence the qualification in cataloguing. The top fillet below the finials, appears original and the lacquer is worn and chipped. The finials are brass and lacquered which is dirty and patinated. The back panel is decorated and is reasonable condition, although cracked and with some losses. Behind the dial the internal wood surface is painted with a red/pink colour perhaps with glued paper below.

Lot 5011

An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the vellum leaf mounted à L'Anglaise, the upper guards carved with a profile of a lady to the recto and a gentleman to the verso, and a stylised vase. The gorge sticks are pierced with a regular design. The leaf features a lady seated at the roadside near to a church with steeple, engaged in conversation with a traveller who has doffed his cap in her presence. To the right, a vignette showing a gentleman in front of a rural dwelling, a lady on a riverbank to the right. The three scenes are bordered in gold and the reserves feature cornflowers, red roses and violets. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 10 and 5/8 inches or 27cm. Together with Another 18th Century Fan in similar vein, the upper guards carved with Chinoiserie, the gorge pierced with two main circular panels. The double paper leaf features a real menagerie of animals. Centrally, a courting couple, seated outside a barn, surrounded by sheep, a dog sleeping at their feet, a farmer seemingly eavesdropping behind a bull, and the side vignettes well painted with colourful birds, themselves perhaps indulging in the courting ritual. The reserves are painted with colourful flowers. The verso features a simple but colourful floral spray. Guard length approx. 11.25 inches or 28.5cm (2). The first fan has some nibbles to the central folds seen when held to the light. The leaf has been cut down on the second fan, and each first stick in from the guards is stuck to a guard.

Lot 5014

Three 18th Century Ivory Fans, to include an unusual example with recto/verso painted on vellum en grisaille with a depiction of rolling English fields and copses stretching well into the distance under a cloudy sky. The more focused scene on the verso shows perhaps a tombstone or animal grave marked with a cross, close to a stone cottage (or is it simply a well?). The monture is well carved and the guards both feature a seated lady, and flowers. The gorge centre is elaborately pierced, the focus being on a shepherdess and her suitor in a shaped oval cartouche. Small square side vignettes are carved with flowers in containers, and all other sticks feature scrolling and flowers, the lower gorge particularly attractive with overlapping design. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm. Together with Joseph: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, probably Dutch, the vellum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, the upper guards carved with the profile of a man to the upper guard and a lady to the lower, together with a vase and perched bird. The gorge is carved with three ovals, containing chinoiserie figures. The leaf features Joseph in the centre, and money changing hands. A camel is tethered in the bushes to the right. Side vignettes feature fruit. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm; and A Circa 1760's Découpé Fan, the monture of ivory, the upper guards carved and pierced and painted with flowers and bands of turquoise, complementing the painted gorge. The leaf features a distinctive bird, perched on a branch of blossom. To the left, a stylised vase, an open fan with floral leaf placed on the top. The decoupage is worked along the top border and in several sections in the body of the fan Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm (3). The scenic fan has subtle leaf repairs to either side, a nailed ivory repair to the lower section of the upper guard and another ivory repair to the first stick in adjacent. Repair near the lady on the upper guard. No signature noted. Joseph: the leaf is slightly tired and several folds are taped from the verso to prevent small splits enlarging. Lacking some sections to some ribs. A little grubby. The découpé fan lacks a rivet, and some parts of the leaf to the upper right. The tip of the lower guard has damage but is present, and some tape has been applied onto the verso over some of the leaf.

Lot 5017

The Toilet of Venus: A Large Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, the upper guards plain, the lower sections shaped and carved at the shoulder and mid gorge, and particularly at the head, which splays when the fan is open. The single vellum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, shows a brightly colourful depiction of Venus at her Toilet, outside on a veranda with imposing Italianate buildings to the background, surrounded by handmaidens, one proffering a large mirror, others seeking to please their mistress, a jewellery box to the foreground, cherubs playing in front of a fountain, the water spouting from the mouth of a large fish. Cupid holds his bow and arrow to the right, to the side of a maiden creating floral displays. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 11.25 inches or 28.5cm. Together with A Circa 1760's Découpé Fan, the monture of ivory, carved and pierced in classical fashion, the double leaf painted with garlands and sprays of flowers, some traditional, some more of the wild. The découpage follows the top border and down into vertical panels at regular intervals. The verso is painted with simple red flowers. Guard length approx. 10.25 inches or 26cm; finally, An 18th Century Ivory Fan with a pink theme. The shaped guards are carved and painted with pink blooms. The gorge has a look of a pagoda fan at the shoulder, with the top of the sticks forming two or three straight sections not usually seen on such a folding fan. The pastoral scene of a musical gathering, led by Cupid playing his pipe, is painted in shades of pink against a silvered background, and the small object painted on the gorge continue this theme. The verso, silvered, is painted with pink flowers. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 26.5cm (3). Good, strong colours retained. Both guards have old nailed repairs with metal plates at the shoulders. Some wear and slight damage mid-leaf bottom edge where the sticks have come detached from the ribs. The second fan has damage to the decoupage. The upper guard lacks the first 5 cm and the other guard looks to have been repaired at the same point. One gorge stick has broken but the section is present, but the colours remain strong. A pretty and feminine fan despite faults. The final fan has a break to the upper guard with a small section missing. That guard is stuck to the first stick in. The silvered leaf is dull, as is the silvering on the guards.

Lot 5019

An Early 18th Century Ivory Biblical Fan with simple monture, and reasonably bulbous head. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, shows an elderly man in long brown robe, and hat with upturned rim, seated under a tree, a lady in blue robe and brown cloak, the latter wrapped around a naked child at her feet, sits to converse. Perhaps a depiction of Abraham and his former mistress Sarah, and their son Ishmael, after she has been forced to leave after taunting Abraham's wife Sarah about her continued barrenness. A large house and tower are just visible in the background. The leaf borders are all adorned with small gold foil leaves, and flowers. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with Another Early Ivory Fan with shaped and bulbous head, the upper guards painted in pink, green and lilac with vines and bunches of grapes. The gorge sticks are shaped and carved with naked children striking poses, perhaps relating to sporting or musical activities. The double leaf is painted with a simple scene of a maiden conversing with a stranger, dressed in rather flamboyant costume and large hat, possible a street player or actor. A house in the background appears to be built on stilts with access by ladder. The simplicity of the scene is balanced by the addition of gold highlights to the costume, house and elegant weeping willow. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 9.75 inches or 25cm (2). The first fan is sound, although loss to two of the ribs have caused the gorge sticks to detach. Rubbing to the folds. One or two of the foil leaves are missing. A small patch of clear tape is noted along the top border on the verso. The second fan has retained good bright colours and gold highlights. A central gorge stick has broken and a small section between the break and the head is missing.

Lot 5031

An 18th Century Painted Ivory Brisé Fan, the monture pierced quite simply to the gorge but elaborately to the upper section. The central cartouche is painted with two ladies in fine 18th century dress being entertained by a musician in a garden, one reaching up into a tree from which hangs a small birdcage. An oval vignette to the left shows a lady collecting flowers, and to the right a male figure in armour with his hand reaching out to attract her attention. The reserves are densely filled with detail, to include musical instruments, classical urns, panels in Wedgwood style, some highlighted in gold, and a vignette at each side, one with a woman, the other with a soldier. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 9.75 inches or 23.5cm.. Good colour. A stick is missing to the left side, the remnants seen adhered to the lower guard. The upper part of the lower guard is plain ivory.

Lot 5041

A Pretty, Turn of the Century Fan, with an unusually shaded mother-of-pearl monture, quite autumnal colours. The leaf background of cream gauze supports cream silk, cut away in places to reveal the gauze. The main silk design is of large heart forms, each covering two folds. Within each heart is an oval of very thin mother-of-pearl, split in the centre to allow the leaf to fold. To hold the silk to the gauze, the layers are embroidered with tiny sequins, following the design edges, with additional sequins to the interior. The outer edge of the leaf is embroidered with a single row of gold sequins. Together with An Early 20th Century Mixed Brussels Lace Fan, the leaf with a typical needle lace rose to the centre, mounted on pink mother-of-pearl (2). The first fan lacks some of the monture, being a section from both guards and at least one gorge stick. Repair to the upper guard on the lace example.

Lot 5063

Four Decorative Fans of Different Styles, the first circa 1900, being of cream gauze embroidered with silver sequins and spangles, in a design of bows and garlands. The bone monture complements the style with light floral design and clouté in silver. a bone fan, circa 1860's, the monture gently shaped and silvered, with light piercing mainly to the gorge. The double paper lithographed leaf, with vibrant orange and black reserves to the recto, has a central pastoral scene featuring two courting couples and one solitary maiden, a goat, and bagpipes. The verso with lighter reserves of cream and gold, features a central cartouche of three young ladies taking the air, a suitor lurking behind bushes in the background. Side vignettes show a young boy and his sister teaching their puppy to jump through a hoop, and two other children watching their cat chase a mouse. Shaped and embossed gold loop, bi-coloured tassel Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 27cm; a bright and cheerful bone fan, the monture carved and decoratively pierced, the gorge with well-balanced design highlighted in gold and silver. The fine cotton leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is painted in two sections, each bordered in gold. To the left, a courting couple wearing traditional Spanish costume, the lady in embroidered and fringed shawl, accompanied by another lady playing a large tambourine, a tall church spire in the background. To the right, tall columns with statues atop, probably a recognised feature of the location in question. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm. Finally a wood fan with monture painted gold, the double painted leaf featuring romantic scenes, with a couple reclining on a grassy river bank, the bewigged and velvet glad gentleman, with lace jabot, accompanied by a young lady in white, blue sash emphasising a tiny waist, a second vignette shows a Spanish lady with tall hair comb and lace mantilla, holding a folding fan, a suitor beside her, a chaperone in black lace watching. In between the scenes, two winged cherubs frolic. To the left, colourful reserves with roses, to the right, blousy pink peonies and white lilac are tied with pale blue ribbon. Guard length approx. 8.25 inches or 21cm (4) . The sequin fan has an old repair to the upper guard, and one rib needs to be secured in position. The lithographed fan has an old metal plate repair to the lower guard, one gorge stick detached from the rib, and some loss to the leaf to the far right as seen from the recto. The fan with Spanish scene is clean and sound, with good detail. No signature noted. The final fan has rubbing to the wood gilding and some splits to folds along the upper leaf edge.

Lot 5066

A Vibrant Circa 1870-1880's Fan, featuring an early autumn outdoor musical gathering within a grand garden, stone urns resplendent with cascading flowers, lush reeds indicating nearby water, leaves turning brown, and a Herm, perhaps of Pan, in the bushes beside the clearing wherein a beautifully dressed lady, sheet music on her lap, listens to music provided by a dandified gentleman wearing doublet and ruff. Accompanied by a young lady seated on the ground, holding a fan. The verso is plain cream, the monture, of unadorned green/pink mother-of-pearl /Burgau. Together with A Bone Fan, the monture plain, the double cream silk leaf painted on the recto in pink with a young lady in early 19th century dress feeding two white doves from crumbs she has carried in her skirt; and A 19th Century Horn Brisé, the stick tips forming a gentle point, all sticks intricately pierced, alternate sticks painted vertically with flowers in colours of orange and blue, or pastel pink roses with green leaves, the verso being similar. Twenty-one inner sticks and, two guards. Barrel head (3). Light wear to folds on the first fan. Small silver metal plate repair to the upper guard. Fan 2 has leaf splits recto/verso. Fan 3 requires a new ribbon.

Lot 5076

Lovers in the Rose Garden: An Attractive Early 20th Century Pale But Shaded Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the stick tips shaped as a T. All mother-of-pearl sections are gilded, with a floral design. The double leaf, the upper layer cut away in places, is painted with a central cartouche showing a suitor doffing his tricorn hat to his lady, whilst walking through the grounds of a large Georgian mansion. Indistinct signature, on the lines of ''E…cf''. To each side, an oval vignette set within a larger section, bordered with tiny sequins. To the left, a painting of a large building with towers. To the right, a similar building but seen from a rural setting. Each oval hangs from a blue ribbon tied in a bow, surrounded by small flowers. Guard length approx. 7.5 inches or 19cm. . Wear to the leaf folds. Light soiling to the verso. This fan has been framed and the frame is available within the hammer price if desired. A few gauze folds are starting to split. Slightly splayed if refolded.

Lot 5089

Two 19th Century Ivory Fans with unusual montures, the first with a narrow leaf thus a smaller upper guard, this being carved with a classical urn, and silvered. The lower guards and gorge widening at the shoulder and descending with roundels at each side of a central V, some gilded, some silvered, tapering into a single row of slightly larger roundels until meeting the head. Shaped white metal loop. The narrow black gauze leaf, embroidered with sequins, is edged with black ''blonde'' handmade bobbin lace. Guard length approx. 10.75 inches or 27cm. Together with Another Ivory Fan with interesting monture, skeleton to the gorge, guards wedge-shaped with wide tips, the upper section carved with flowers and a cherub within a sloping frame. The lower guard sections are carved with more such frames, these enclosing different features such as a bird or a ladybird. The gorge sticks, of differing widths, either continue the ''frame'' design or alternate with flowers, with traces of gilding. The double paper leaf is divided into sections, three of which are painted. The central cartouche depicts a lady and her suitor who appears to be carrying a set of bagpipes. To each side, smaller vignettes feature a lady in a rural setting, or a man in similar surroundings. In between, panels painted with pale blue backgrounds feature delicate flowers or appliqués of coloured foil. All sections are bordered in gold, with an exterior background in dull turquoise finished with gold. The verso is painted more crudely with a landscape, and a larger version of the lady in the vignette to the right of the recto. Contained in a card fan box with glazed green paper to the exterior, the inside lid with paper label for Duvelleroy, the name printed on a folding fan, and the addresses for London at 167 Regent Street and Paris, at 17 Passage des Panoramas. Guard length approx. 10.25 inches or 26cm (2). For the first fan, note wear to the black gauze. One gorge stick has been repaired from the mid-point to the tip. Another three are in need of similar restoration. The silvering is now dull, whereas a lot of the gilded roundels are still bright. Fan 2 has a grey look to the monture but this might simply be that it needs extensive cleaning. One gorge stick is broken with a section missing. Some of the foil appliqués are missing from the leaf. The box lacks one end. The label is clean.

Lot 5092A

Three 19th Century Fans, comprising a small and pale horn brisé with barrel head, circa 1820's, the twenty inner sticks and two guards, carved, and pierced, with pointed tips. A painted band runs under the ribbon, a gold background highlighting roses and daisies in pink, tomato red, and blue. The verso is painted with a similar gold band featuring simple leaves. Guard length 6 1/8 inches or 15.5cm; Together with a small horn fan, the monture gently incised with flowers and bows and then lightly gilded, the silk leaf, backed with cream gauze, mounted à l'Anglaise. Part of the design features silk cut away to reveal the gauze behind, most noticeably at the upper border. Tiny gold sequins and shaped silver spangles are densely embroidered throughout, the upper border including ones of floral form. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm. Finally, an attractive and frothy dark cream ostrich feather fan, overlaid with shaved feathers which emphasise the edges. The monture and loop, of resin or ''blonde tortoiseshell'', is plain but adorned with an ornate and elegant gold metal monogram on the upper guard. Overall height 13 inches or 33cm. . Brisé fan has rubbing to the painted detail and the tip of one stick has losses. Splays slightly when closed. Warping to two sticks. The gauze and sequin fan has a split top left, just to the bottom of the border. The first gorge stick in from the left has broken away from the rib. The extreme top edge is lacking some of the bordering, looped gold thread. The feather fan is in good general order, the monogram bright.
