ALEXANDROVNA OLGA: (1882-1960) Russian Grand Duchess, sister of Tsar Nicholas II. A.L.S., Olga, four pages, 8vo, Kiev, 1916, to her sister Xenia. The Grand Duchess writes a social letter sending news of her current activities and mutual family, friends and acquaintances, in part, 'It was 6 when Pupka came to find me & rolled on the grass saying he was tired & wished he had the book we were reading together - as he would have read aloud with joy. Then he said something about his stomach in French which I didn't catch so I asked “What has your stomach to do with it?” He answered with great satisfaction “It has done all that it ought to do”. We had a laugh after this phrase! Then we travelled back to where we had left T. A. [Tatiana Andreevna Gromova] asleep under a big tree & we found her dreadfully excited as it seems she was awoken by a watchman who announced “I arrest you”. It seems we are not allowed in this part of the wood because all the trenches are there prepared for the reception of certain guests - who - probably will not come….She was awfully frightened as he had a big stick. She told him we were 6 persons & he kindly went in search for us others. Thank goodness he never reached me - I was all alone…..and would have been terrified. He caught the other 3 (not Pupka) but they laughed at him & when we were getting into our motor - we gave him some apples and he was quite pleased. I told him we would come back again soon & he only smiled'. She concludes 'When I can get permission I'd like to get married, take 2 weeks leave & then come back & work - the same as now - only I will have the quiet joy of knowing that we are married. What do you say to this? Write & tell me. I haven't spoken to anyone about it.' A couple of very small, light stains to the edges, not affecting the text or signature, VG
