Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society, Marine Medal, 3rd type, bronze (Thos. Jones. S.S. “Bavarian” For Rescuing With Boat’s Crew 4 of the Schooner “Eddy Pierce” Sept. 26. 1888.) with integral top riband buckle, suspension slightly bent, good very fine £120-£160 --- Thomas Jones was born in Liverpool on 12 April 1873, and upon joining the Mercantile Marine was awarded the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society Lifesaving Marine Medal in bronze for his participation in the rescue of four of the crew of the schooner Eddy Pierce on 26 September 1888. The event was covered in local newspapers: ‘A silver medal and vote of thanks to Captain Archibald W. Ball, steamship Bavarian, for having on the 26th September last, rescued four of the crew of the schooner Eddy Pierce, which vessel was in a sinking condition on the American coast, and had fallen over on her beams ends immediately before the rescue. A silver medal and vote of thanks to Mr George W. Muir, chief officer of the Bavarian, for having with a boat’s crew, rescued four men from the above schooner, the captain having been drowned. A bronze medal and 20 shillings to each of the seven men who formed the boat’s crew and rescued the crew of the Eddy Pierce in a gale of wind and heavy sea.’ A further article states: ‘The Board of Trade have received through the Foreign Office the under-mentioned rewards, which have been made by the United States Government to certain of the officers and crew of the British Steamer Bavarian, in recognition of services rendered by them to the ship-wrecked crew of the American schooner Eddy Pierce on the 26th of September: - a gold watch and chain to the master, Archibald W. Ball; a gold medal and $50 to the chief officer, George W. Muir and a sum of $10 to each of the seven seamen, John Oliver Johnston, James Byrne, James Henry Spencer, Arthur McGuire, James Burns, John Hurley and Thomas Jones.’ Jones later served as a Master in the Mercantile Marine during the Great War (entitled to a British War Medal and Mercantile Marine War Medal). Sold with a USB stick of copied research, which includes a photographic image of the recipient.

A pre WW2 ‘Great Escape’ interest swagger stick, once the property of Pilot Officer Marcel Zillessen (1917-1999). The swagger stick is of usual form, with a lacquered malacca body, brass ferrule, and a nickel pommel. The pommel has badge of the Gresham School OTC (Officer Training Corps), and has the name ‘Zillessen’ scratched into both the metal of the pommel, and to the wood. There is also the word ‘Gresham’ and ‘Holt’, the latter being the location of the Gresham School in Norfolk. Notes: Marcel Zillessen was born in Northampton in 1917, to a German father and Irish mother. He attended the Gresham’s School between 1930 and 1933, joining the Officer Training Corps between the ages of 13 and 16. It’s unknown what rank the young Zillessen held during his time in the OTC, but this swagger stick is a memento of his time there. Marcel spent some time studying at university in Berlin, and was a fluent German speaker, a skill that was to pay dividends during his time spent as a POW. In 1943, While piloting a Hurricane in North Africa, Marcel was shot down, and eventually taken to the Luftwaffe run Prisoner of War camp, Stalag Luft III, which held allied Air Force personnel. Zillessen’s fluency in German help to gain him favours from his guard captors, who were to provide him with pens, paper and ink that were later used to forge travel documents. Marcel was instrumental in planning the escape from the camp, using the tunnels known as ‘Tom, Dick, and Harry’, and it’s well documented that he was to be the last man out from the Harry tunnel. Ultimately, the plot was foiled, and Marcel fled back to his barrack hut when the tunnels were discovered. Being the last man in line to leave may have ultimately saved his life, as 73 of the escapees were captured within 3 days, with 50 being executed on the direct orders of Hitler. Marcel’s character was portrayed in the Great Escape movie by James Garner (playing Bob Hendley ‘the scrounger’), although it’s thought that Garner’s character may have been an amalgamation of several different men from the camp. It’s thought that the swagger stick was acquired by a school friend, and fellow OTC member of Zillessen, who himself later went on to work at Bletchley Park during WW2. Approximately 70.3cm length. Condition: generally good. No major dents or splits to pommel, just normal light wear from use. The malacca body is free from any major issues, with just light wear and contact marks commensurate with use. Brass ferrule intact and in good used condition.

AUGUSTE-NICOLAS CAIN (FRENCH 1821-1894) A LARGE ANIMALIER BRONZE FIGURE OF A BULL LATE 19TH CENTURY Standing amongst an overturned wheat cart on a rocky outcrop, signed to cast and with sculptor's initials AC to right flank Approximately 69cm high , base 54cm wide Cain was an apprentice butcher before designing walking stick and paperweight decorations for Parisian jewellers Fannière Frères. In 1846 he debuted his first Salon as an animalier and subsequently submitted small bronzes using the sculptor PJ Mêne's foundry. He married Pierre-Jules Mêne's daughter and took over his studio upon his death in 1879. Mêne's widespread connections bought special commissions to Cain including works for the Louvre, many French gardens and New York's Central Park Zoo Condition Report: The whole in generally good condition- some rubbing around base margins and paler patina from handling to raised surfaces. Old small polish/water spot stains to the base- which is quite dirty. A PAIR OF VICTORIAN CIRCULAR BRASS STICK STANDS LATE 19TH CENTURY With ball finials and paw feet, stamped 'W. T&S' for William Tonks and Sons 64cm high, 23.5cm diameter William Tonks and Sons were a Birmingham company founded in 1789. They started as woodscrew makers, moving onto steel toys and finally making cast and wrought brass pieces. They won awards at exhibitions in London and Paris in the mid 19th century. Condition Report: Wear from domestic use and with knocks, scratches and wear notably around upper apertures and bases. Pans probably repatinated to bases. The stems seem to be brass veneered and in one the lower stem sections of brass have started to spread with gaps developing Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report.
