MOLLINER, FELIT (CHAS MOLLINER, WORKING EDINBURGH 1784-1801) AN 18TH CENTURY MAHOGANY STICK BAROMETER having a pineapple finial over an arched brass dial, inscribed Molliner Felit, and with scales 31 to 28, thermometer also with scale, the plain trunk with exposed tube over a rectangular cistern. 105cm (41.5in) high.

A VICTORIAN VENEERED OAK HALLSTAND having an arched pediment on central column with circular mirror inset and two pairs of branches each having two hanging pegs, central glove drawer above a moulded splat on a shaped rectangular base with demi-lune stick holders (one brass holder lacking). 190.5cm high (75in)

A George III mahogany stick barometer, the silvered register with thermometer engraved Cha Aiano, Fecit, broken triangular pediment with brass finial above a moulded and line inlaid case, turned cistern cover, 99cm high, c.1800 (see illustration). Charles Aiano was working in London from c. 1790 until he moved to Canterbury in 1820 continuing until 1841. This is one of his earlier, London-made instruments.

A George III mahogany stick barometer, paper regiser, signed Stenson, Derby, moulded cornice and sliding cistern cover, 94cm high, c.1800. John Stenson (1747-1817) was a larger-than-life figure in his day. A self-proclaimed Scientist, Weatherglass Maker, Tenor and Musician he was generally regarded as a most upright and punctual man as well as an eccentric one, bathing daily in the Derwent into old age. He was the son of Joseph Stenson, a Derby framework-knitter and was apprenticed to the celebrated John Whitehurst FRS from 1761-1768, after which he worked for his old master until 1778 when he set up shop in Bag Lane, in Derby (now East Street). His earlier barometers used Whitehurst's unique 0-60 scale and he was also a manufacturer of saccarometers, hygrometers, spirit levels and electrical pistols .
