D. Manticha, a George III mahogany Masonic stick barometer, the silvered dial having a vernier gauge, attached thermometer and engraved with the maker's name D. Manticha, fecit', also engraved with a set square and compass, the mahogany case having a pediment top, turned cistern cover and herring-bone crossbanding, 95 cm. Dominic Manticha is recorded as working in Ely Court, Holborn, London from circa 1785 and is considered one of the better of the barometer workers who emigrated from Italy at this time to work in Britain.condition reportCosmetically it is in very good condition showing only age related wear.  The top right of the silver dial approximately 2cm long is warn away as can be seen partially in the main picture.  The mercury is present and seems to be working?

Awarded the VC for gallantry during a raid on Dusseldorf Germany on 3rd November 1943. Despite being severely wounded, continued to fly his damaged Lancaster bomber to bomb Dusseldorf. Managed to land his aircraft safely upon return Flt Lt William ( Bill) Reid VC 61 Squadron RAFVR. Awarded the VC for gallantry during a raid on Dusseldorf Germany on 3rd November 1943. Despite being severely wounded, continued to fly his damaged Lancaster bomber to bomb Dusseldorf. Managed to land his aircraft safely upon return. He Joined 617 Sqn at Woodhall Spa in Jan 1944. 31st July 1944 and hit by stick of 1000lb delayed action bombs by a plane which had bombed earlier from the main forces at a higher level. General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Canal Zone (22355685 Pte J J Beurskens Para) mounted court-style together with a copy Coronation 1953, unnamed as issued; and a copy Efficiency Medal, E.II.R., 2nd issue, Territorial (22355685 Cpl. J. J. Melrose. Para) planchet detached from suspension on last; together with the recipient’s unofficial National Service Medal 1939-60 (Cpl J Melrose 22355685) in case of issue, the GSM nearly extremely fine (4) £200-£240 --- John Melrose, né Beurskens was born on 9 December 1931 and joined the Royal Scots as a National Serviceman aged 18. He transferred to the Parachute Regiment, and spent the rest of his National Service in 3 Para in Cyprus, the Canal Zone, and at home. In 1953 he was part of the Parachute Regiment contingent that lined the route of the Coronation. He subsequently served with the Territorial Army, and attained the rank of Corporal. In 1960 he changed his name from Beurskens to Melrose. He died in Dumfries on 20 May 2021. Sold together with approximately 120 photographs, the majority taken by the recipient whilst posted overseas; and a memory stick of research.
