A Chinese zitan 'double mythical beast' sectional pricket candle stickRepublic periodThe base finely carved as a mythical beast with its horned cub, both with enamelled eyes, set on the back with an archaistic pricket candle stick set on a shaft of archaistic stylised birds surmounted by a bowl of lotus lappets.26.5cm wide.民國 紫檀雕瑞獸燭臺
An interesting and scarce, WW1 era Prisoner of War carved walking stick. Fashioned in what appears to be stained oak, with a stylised carved alligator head displaying its teeth and a scaled neck piece. Inset into the reptiles head is a bone cartouche, with the naively engraved details of ‘STOBS 1919’. With stippled copper collar and original ferrule to the tip. Notes: Stobs military and internment camp was located just outside the Scottish town of Hawick in the Scottish Borders. The camp started life under British Government ownership in 1902, when barracks were erected for the housing of troops. The first records soldiers stationed there were recorded as the 1st Queens Own Cameron Highlanders in 1903. By 1914 the camp was used for training purposes, and later an internment camp for Prisoners of War, and aliens (German civilians having resided in the U.K. up until WW1). It’s location made it a challenging place to mount an escape from, but attempts were known. After Spring 1915 the camp dealt with both civilian and military internees. From early in WW1, prisoners were allowed to sell the arts & crafts pieces they’d made to camp visitors, locals and the camp guards. It seems certain that this stick would have been one of one of those hand crafted pieces, made in early 1919, when German prisoners had yet to be repatriated. Approximately 89.5cm in length. Condition: good overall colour and patination. Old fracture to the neck / head area of the alligator, but this remains solid and there is no movement. Both the copper collar and ferrule are securely fixed in place.
