1st century BC-1st century AD. A sceptre comprising a slender round-section iron rod and bronze handle with bulb to each end, the finial a janiform bust of two female faces each with curls to the sides, cucullus head-covering and diadem with plate to the brow; mounted on a custom-made stand. 2.1 kg total, 70.5cm including stand (27 3/4"). From an important London collection; previously with Bonhams, London, 13 April 2011, lot 149 (£10,000-£12,000); formerly in a private French collection, formed in the 1970s; accompanied by copies of the relevant Bonhams catalogue pages; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.163491-10069. The Latin word sceptrumfrom which we derive 'sceptre' is based on the Greek  σκῆπτρον denoting a staff or walking-stick. The janiform female bust is unusual and may represent e.g. the priestesses of Vesta in Rome. Fine condition. ( A video of this lot can be viewed on Timeline Auctions website.)

A pair of large Chinese blanc de chine Buddhist Lion joss stick holders, Dehua, Kangxi period, H. 34.5cmCONDITION: Both figures have typical firing cracks in various places all over, please see photographs, one of the lions has a loss to the top of the joss stick holder, a hairline crack across its rear left leg and a few small losses to the end of its tail, the second lion has a few small losses to the end of its tail and an open firing crack to the top of its mouth and nose, otherwise in reasonable condition.

Roullet & Decamps. A 19th century French cat automaton, modelled as an anthropomorphic cat nobleman holding a mouse by its tail and a walking stick, mechanism working playing musical tune with the figure rotating and swivelling from side to side, base 9.5 x 9.5in., overall height 20in.CONDITION: Overall a little tired, fur of the cat looks good, ears out of alignment but that is thought to be intentional, costume now very dirty with discoloured lace work and faded silkwork, hands are painted carved wood with minor flaking, tail of mouse looks to be added, velvet covering to base possibly original but very worn, mechanism going, comes with original winding key.

A pair of late Victorian silver corinthian column two branch, three light candelabra by Walker & Hall,(a.f.) with scroll arms and gadrooned borders, on square bases, Sheffield, 1893, weighted, height 45.5cm.CONDITION: One stick is slighlty leaning with afew dings around the lower section. A few minor knocks around the base rim. Both arms have been solder repaired where it joins at the centre. Central sconce recess is bent and has a split to the silver. One other sconce is bent inwards slightly. Hallmarks clear.The other stick is also slightly leaning with some minor dings around the lower section. Large dent to one side of the base rim. One of the arms has a visible lead solder repair. Hallmarks clear.

A pair of late Victorian silver candlesticks by William Hutton & Sons Ltd, with waisted knopped stems, on fluted square bases, London, 1896, 29.7cm, weighted.CONDITION: One stem is leaning sligtly. There are few minor bumps around the top rim of each stick. Minor bumps around the lower knops on each and one has a visible small piece of lead solder. Hallmarks clear.

Some minor wear to the decoration on the base. Several visible dits/dings to the stick in general. Hallmarks clear, but with some rubbing to collar mark. Tired crest on sconce. A Victorian cast iron stick stand, modelled as a terrier holding a riding crop, the oval base with foliate dish, stamped with a registration mark number 8529?, width 25in. depth 13.5in. height 23in.CONDITION: Overall in honest untouched condition, does look to have originally had a black finish but this is now mostly showing as light surface oxidisation, the right hand loop of the whip has been re-welded at some point, leaf tray lifts out from the base.
