Lot 2124

An Elegant Tortoiseshell and Horn Fan, circa 1900, the monture clouté with steel, the guards of attractively mottled tortoiseshell and the gorge sticks of horn. The dark cream silk leaf, mounted à L'anglaise is backed with pale cream net, then embroidered with bands and swags of tiny silver sequins and larger spangles of oval or floral shape. Together with a brown card fan box, lined and padded in cream silk, bearing the gold printed label of E. Kees 9 Boulevard des Capucines, Paris. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm. the silk is still sound, the fan is slightly warped when seen closed, one rib is broken so the stick is loose and another rib is detached.

Lot 2126

A Late 19th/Early 20th Century Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture with light silvered decoration to include a butterfly on the tip of the upper guard. The yellow organdie leaf is overlaid with olive green silk, cut away in regular sections to reveal the organdie, these sections bordered with gold sequins. Elsewhere the silk is embroidered with star shaped gold sequins with the addition of silver sequin swags, other silver spangles in larger and more interesting shapes within the upper panels. Together with a card fan box covered and lined in cream silk, god initials to the exterior, probably M G, and marked inside the lid, in gold, for Ate Buissot, Fabrique D'Eventails, rue de Clery 25 (Paris). Guard length 9 inches or 24cm Purchased at Christie's SK on December 5th 1978 for £22.00. The fan is in very good order save for one rib being detached from the MOP gorge stick. All parts present. Some damage to the silk on the fan box.

Lot 2129

A Circa 1900 Mother-of-Pearl Fan, of an unusual taupe shade, the gorge sticks gently shaped at the shoulder but otherwise plain. Note the additional guard stick on top of the leaf to the left. The fontange leaf, of strong gold lamé, is embroidered with both gold silk thread and sequins, with additional ribbon work, all giving different shading to the sunflowers which feature across the top border. The stems and leaves beneath also incorporate gold metal thread. The verso is plain. Overall height 11 inches or 28cm. given the thickness of the fabric and the amount of added decoration, this fan is quite hard to hold open. The upper guard has a bread just above the shoulder.

Lot 2155

Dame Margot Fonteyn: A Late 19th Century White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the sticks plain, with metal loop. Mounted with a Brussels needle lace leaf, a central panel with border containing flowers and large leaves, almost of the vine, the latter with intricate fillings. The sides and top borders of the leaf are designed with sprays of flowers and leaves in a smaller scale. The ribs are of white mother-of-pearl. Contained in a card fan box covered in cream moiré silk satin, lined in cream silk and marked inside for Duvelleroy, 167 regent street. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm Provenance: Purchased at Christie's SK on December 12th 2000, lot 47 in the sale of the Dame Margot Fonteyn Collection. generally good, a repair to the shoulder of one stick, holding well. One or two pinholes in the lace. The box is exceptionally clean and bright.

A Small and Delicate Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, circa 1820's, the twenty one inner sticks and two guards very finely carved, the guards with tiny flowers, the main body of the fan featuring three carved vignettes, the central one larger and carved with initials, the others with pagodas and trees, the reserves carved in formal borders of linking floral designs. The verso is flat. Guard length 6 and 3/8 inches or 16cm. generally very good. Ribbon sound. Some tiny slivers missing from approx. 3 sticks, the stick between the central vignette and the one to the right being the most noticeable.

A Mid-19th Century Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, the seventeen inner sticks carved in low relief with figures, foliage buildings and boats, the two guards deeply carved with pagodas, figures and trees. Together with A Chinese Carved Ivory Mandarin fan, Qing Dynasty, the guards very deeply and intricately carved with pagodas, figures and trees, the gorge sticks carved in a similar fashion in low relief. The double leaf, with many figures dressed in robes of silk, their faces of applied ivory, features several figures wearing yellow robes. Brisé: guard length 8 inches or 20.5cm Mandarin: guard length 11 inches or 28cm (2). the brisé fan has the remains of one further stick present. Ribbon defective. Requires cleaning. The Mandarin fan has a badly damaged and split leaf, all does appear present. The monture is in good order albeit dusty.

Lot 2184

A Good Chinese Carved Ivory Fan, Qing Dynasty, the guards deeply carved, mounted with painted white feathers and tipped with marabou, in a fitted black lacquer box, this being lined with blue silk, the inside lid divided into three panels with figures wearing silk robes, having applied ivory faces, several holding fans, bordered with vibrant flowers. The painting on the leaf is fresh and colourful, depicting four large long-tailed birds, their plumage yellow and brown, their tails white, noting the arrival of a smaller colourful bird with blue tipped wings and tail, wishing to join those already present at each side. The birds have found a grassy bank with low branches and surrounded by vibrant blossoms, berries and leaves, in strong pinks, lilac, and blue. The verso is painted with peacocks, one with tail feathers on full display, perched on a branch amid vibrant flowers and accompanied by butterflies. The fan is completed with a silk tassel in three colours, and a carved ivory oval toggle. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm plus marabouGenerally good, clean, strong colour. The marabou is not only on the tips but also applied to the lower leaf border on both sides. The guard tips have lost their marabou. There is a period repair to the lower guard, at which point a stick may be lacking. The box albeit fitted is not the correct fitted shape at the lower guard.

Alfred Dunhill - Novelty Art Deco faux cigarette lighter minaudière, Exclusive and high quality makeup/powder compact set, in the shape of a lighter, with a perfect finish and elaboration, with all over engine turned design. This piece was manufactured by the Alfred Dunhill company in 1928. It looks similar to Dunhill lighter model "Unique C", fabricated from 1925 to 1930, but in a larger measure, the cross bar stamped 'DUNHILL', the striker formed as an eye liner, the hinged arm lifting to reveal a screw top perfume with dip stick, the hinged front opening to reveal mirror and powder compartment with original puff and powder still present, the base with pull-out lipstick tube, the underside stamped, PATENT APPLIED FOR, PROV. PAT. 14444/28, 2 3/8in.(6cm.) wide. *Condition: in excellent condition, the only thing to note is the eye liner missing it's pin slide (still functional).

This substantial work contains a plethora of beautiful designs, to be worked in varying techniques, for household linen and clothing, e.g. fans, shoes and slippers, gloves, stomachers, borders, night caps, jackets, neckerchiefs, muffs, neck linen, gown hems, hats, bags, aprons, tassels, saddle cloths, and book covers. This volume was purchased by Martin Orskey at Sotheby's in 1968, apart from which no other copy has been seen at auction. The V&A has a copy of the work in its collections.
