Lot 5099

Militaria: Two Scarce French Miniature Brisé Fans from the Great War, WWI. The first, dated left to right 1914, 1915 and 1916, is painted on bone with the flags of the allies, and ribboned with laurel leaves. Both guards, when seen open on the recto, and the verso, are painted with the Lebel gun and the blue French Kepi cap. On the verso, a painted battlefield attack scene, the French wearing the ''bleu horizon'' uniform, with buildings. This is one of three fans known to show an attack in an urban environment. Guard approx. 3.1/8 inches or 8cm. The second fan, painted on wood, is ribboned with the French tri-color. The recto shows two French flags with crossed arms on their flag stand, within a wreath of laurels. Above the ribbon each stick tip is painted with flowers and berries, blue, white and red, again the tri-color. The verso is painted with a field canon ''Notre 75'' (75 mm gun, well detailed on this fan) and is dated 1914/1915 and 1916, and signed Teoda. Guard approx. 3.1/8 inches or 8cm. See ''Fans: War and Peace'' published following an exhibition at the Fan Museum, Greenwich, in 2009, for other examples, and the comprehensive research on the subject of WWI miniature fans by FCI member Ondine Pavy-Pluvinage., in particular Bulletins numbers 99 and 101. Good. The first fan needs new ribbon.

Lot 5114

An Early 19th Century Tortoiseshell Brisé Fan, barrel head, the twenty inner sticks and two guards all with pointed tips. The recto is intricately and vibrantly painted in gold in chinoiserie fashion, showing a large palace to the left, two figures visible in the tower, and perhaps a small animal on the roof. One man smokes a pipe on the terrace whilst another throws a rope to a small boat crossing the water. On the other bank another grand pagoda is facing the scene. Within this cartouche, the sky is filled with birds in flight, and stylised trees. The reserves are painted with tiny stars within a formal border, and in the lower gorge. The stick tips and upper gorge areas feature quite classical arches and trellis. Black silk ribbon. The verso is also painted, with a single figure amidst vegetation, and a large bird. Guard length 6.25 inches or 15.5cm.. Generally, very good, save for some rubbing to the paint in places. The paint on the verso is dull.

A one-inch split noted to the ground, to the lower left near the first stick in. Break to the loop. The lace leaf on fan 2 has most likely been remounted after washing.

Lot 5145

A Late 19th Century White Mother-of-Pearl Fan with bone ribs, the leaf of Brussels Bobbin Appliqué, the design featuring three large roses, small and medium flowers and leaves filling the background, made to feel light and airy with the addition of tiny dots. First fan, one gorge stick needs to be re-secured. Tiny dent in the upper guard near the shoulder. Second fan, the upper guard is broken an inch above the rivet but the overlap is there for repair. A sliver of MOP missing, but a repair would most likely be feasible. The leaf has possibly been washed.

Lot 5160

Two Late 19th/Early 20th Century Fans, the first a small pink mother-of-pearl example, a Brussels/Bruges bobbin lace leaf mounted on bone ribs. The second fan, much larger, the monture of shaped wood painted matt white, and silvered, is to be noted for the intricacy of the upper leaf. Each stick runs the full height of the fan, and has slots made to thread the narrow cream ribbon which forms seventeen horizontal bands. The ribbon ends are trapped between each guard and the final stick each side. Backed with a lightweight cream gauze. When closed, the looped ribbons lie proud of the backing, to the recto. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm.. The ribbon work fan has a slightly ragged upper edge on the gauze and a few areas where the fabric has had some repair.

Lot 5164

A Good Late 19th/Early 20th Century Brussels Point De Gaze Needle Lace Fan, the leaf mounted à l'Anglaise on mother of pearl ribs, the strong design featuring sunflowers with raised stamens. The monture, a pretty shade of green/pink, probably burgau, is also gilded, with small flowers and leaves on the guards and shoulders of the gorge, a line of foliage also passing down the length of each stick to the left side. Guard length approx. 10 and 5/8 inches or 27cm.. Very good, clean, firm. Note imperfections to the MOP to the rear of the gorge sticks.

Lot 5165

A Good Late 19th Century Brussels Needle Lace Fan Leaf with geometric design, mounted on mother-of-pearl ribs, on green/pink mother-of-pearl (burgau) with piercing to the upper guard, a panel left bare for initials. The form of the repeated lace design is reminiscent of an open brisé fan. The inner designs are a complex creation by the lace designer, with multiple fillings, and in the centre are entwined initials, ''S?''. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm.. One rib and gorge stick have parted company but are present, breaks and some loss to ribs.

Lot 5169

A Good Tortoiseshell and Black Bobbin Lace Fan, late 19th century, the monture with foliate design, both upper guards with a cherub, the gorge with leaves and scrolling surrounding a winged cherub with outstretched arms, holding laurel wreaths. The deep lace leaf is worked with detailed flowers and leaves, backed with black net and mounted on tortoiseshell ribs. Shaped tortoiseshell loop, and shaped head. Guard length 12.5 inches or 32cm.. Very light nibbling to the tortoiseshell as seen on the stick edges. The very top edge of the lace leaf has a very narrow black silk border at the verso, this is missing in some places.

Lot 5181

A Last Quarter 19th Century Pheasant Feather Fan, the monture of tortoiseshell, the gorge sticks mottled giving an attractive colour when held to the light. The feathers have been carefully applied so that the top border presents three levels of white specks against a dark brown background, the more mottled and irregular lower feathers a lighter brown with smaller white speckles. Seen from the verso, these feathers are set against a black feather, giving edged detail to each stick and covering the ribs. Cream silk ribbon. Tortoiseshell loop. Guard length 8.3/8 inches or 21.5 cm with the feathers protruding past the guard by a further 1.25 inches or 3cm.. Some slight loss to the feathers, mainly to those applied to both guards. Lot 5200

Two 19th Century Advertising Fans, the first for a restaurant in CAEN, in the Place du Marché au Bois, run by Fabre Succr, named ''Ancien Restaurant Bourdeux'' and said to be an establishment recommended to tourists for the reputation of its wine cellar and excellent food. The verso, with gentle classical gold border detail, notes ''Event. Chambrelent 7 Croix, Paris - Déposé''.. Interestingly, the first fan's recto/leaf paper has not been fully trimmed back and overhangs. It looks like damage but is actually surplus to requirements, as seen from the verso. Fan 2 lacks the very bottom of the lower guard and first stick in. Note the substituted washer on the rivet which is rectifying the matter!

Lot 5201

Three 20th Century French Advertising Fans, the first advertising the Hotel des Réservoirs in Versailles, the verso printed with a crest and motto ''Ancien Hôtel de la Mar se de Pompadour''. Since 1936 it has been classified as a historical monument. The recto, printed in soft colours, shows wealthy 18th century gentry relaxing or taking exercise beside a lake. The design is signed to the top right ''L. Galloit''; a smaller advertising fan with double paper leaf, for the Casino Municipal at Enghien. The verso in soft green and cream, depicts a young lady with her spaniel, a suitor in attendance; the final fan, in ballon form, is printed to the recto with stylised leaves, cream, tinged with gold, on a turquoise background. The guards, slightly darker than the 34 inner sticks, have light gold painted foliage, a bird to the tip on the recto, a butterfly on the verso. Shaped metal loop. Guard approx. 14.25 inches or 36 cm*. Together with A Second Japanese Fan, circa 1870's, the recto boldly painted with figures in traditional kimonos undertaking various activities: two ladies preparing to take tea; two men seated and playing drafts, and finally a lone man, holding an open fan, having perhaps just finished his ablutions. Signed by the artist to the left. The verso of the double paper leaf shows a crane flying low over a garden, exquisitely painted Iris in lilac and blue in full flower, bamboo leaves mixing with wildflowers in pink and lilac. Signed and stamped by the artist. Simple bamboo monture. At one end a small piece of tape holds the thread to the guard, just needs to be re-glued. The smaller fan has a split almost the length of one fold, some loss to the lower border of the leaf, centrally, grubby folds at each side of the guards, and general rubbing to most folds.

Over time, I have developed several series that are distinct yet related. Subject matter may
include but is not limited to social, political, and historical narrative, creative portraiture, dreams, spirituality and eroticism. I also work with found object mask making, printmaking, ink drawings, mixed media oil stick, and photography. I sketch almost daily developing spontaneous ideas, documenting current
thoughts or issues, and exploring and working out ideas for paintings. Jim Denomie was born in Hayward, Wisconsin on July 6, 1955 and is a member of the Lac Court Oreilles Band of Ojibwe.
