A 19th century Chinese Canton carved ivory fan, the guards each blind carved with figure scenes and mythical beasts, the nineteen sticks each finely carved with busy figure landscape and pagoda scenes, having vacant central cartouche, 19cm Condition Report / Extra Information Some sticks with small number of minor losses to pierced gauze. One stick chipped upper left. Guards with some yellowing.
An early 19th century walnut bowfront stick barometer, the silvered dial signed 'Lerboni, Calton Street, Edinburgh', having adjustable scale, the case with ebony stringing, h.101cm Condition Report / Extra Information Case excellent. A TORTOISESHELL AND GOLD MOUNTED PARASOL, circa 1910, Paragon S Fox & Co Limited, mounted by Charles Cooke, retailed by Brigg & Sons London, the tortoiseshell handle decorated with gold mounted swag and ribbon bow design and the name 'Alix' to the finial, with a brown cover, marked "Paragon S Fox & Co Limited, Brigg London", gold assay mark Sheffield 1908, 39 inches long. See illustration Charles Cooke was the primary mounter of sticks, canes and umbrellas for Brigg & Sons of St James's St. London. His address from 1907 to 1916 was 4 Rigmount Street Bedford Square where he is listed as a stick mounter. (See J Culme 'The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838 - 1914 vol 1, 1987 p. 95-6.) Provenance: 'Alix'………… The parasol was given to the vendor's aunt Alix Cavendish (1901 -1925) daughter of Lord Richard Cavendish, younger brother of 9th Duke of Devonshire and Lady Moyra de Vere Beauclerk, daughter of 10th Duke of St Albans, by her godmother Nancy Lady Astor, a great friend of the family.
