Railway Advertising: Two Large Late 19th Century Printed Paper Fans advertising the “Chemins de Fer de l'Ouest”, the double paper leaf mounted on basic wood sticks, the guards also being covered with paper advertising. The first fan, with a beige background, is a less common example from this series of travel fans. The vignettes on the recto show the pretty coastal towns of Dinard, Trouville, the island of Mont St. Michel, and an unnamed location which may be discernible with a study of the costume worn by a young lady perched on a rock. The fan is printed with details relating to cheaper fares and travel offers. The verso is printed with a variety of adverts including a transatlantic line to New York and other far flung places, a dance with orchestra during the summer at Trouville, and “Le Journal” newspaper. Possibly printed by “??NERME”, a few letters are present on the bottom border. Guard length 12.5 inches or 32cm. Together with a further advertising fan for the “Chemins de Fer de l'Ouest” printed by Oberthur Rennes and issued by J. Ganné,Paris. The design, of bold nasturtiums and leaves, is signed “G. The second fan has possibly been pinned to something with a tiny hole top left and a loss of a small section top right. Some wear to the folds. One gorge stick broken at the rivet, but present.

Lot 4222

A Chinese Carved and Pierced Ivory Brisé Fan (or possibly good quality bone?), 19th century, Qing Dynasty, elaborately carved throughout with tiny flowers and leaves surrounding a central carved shield, a formal border enclosing this section and the design repeating on the upper sticks and guards. Two guards and twenty-two inner sticks, all wedge-shaped. Contained in a card fan box with "L.J. Bellander (?) & Co Boston - New York" Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm. Together with a Chinese carved ivory fan, 19th century, the guards deeply carved with a dragon, the gorge lightly incised recto/verso with a shaped cartouche featuring figures. The cream leaf, of cotton gauze, is embroidered in cream silk with a dragon with three (?) claws. Guard length 8 and 5/8 inches or 22cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . First fan, ribbon sound. Several losses to the carving, in two areas to the tips, and one stick is damaged in two places. Fan 2 is in good order.

Lot 4223

An Oversized Chinese Wood Cockade Fan, the natural wood panels painted to the recto with a landscape to the background featuring flowering prunus trees, and several figures to the foreground, all wearing ornate robes. The ones to the left are possibly warriors, wearing body plates, and black hats with red crowns, a more elaborately dressed man to their side. Facing them, a lady bows and offers a gentleman something from a tray, the male figure wearing an elaborate black hat with red detail, to all appearances someone of import. The recto is more simply painted with blue birds, a stylised tree, and blossoms. A small lilac and cream silk tassel is attached to the rivet. Overall height when open 31 inches or 79 cm including the short handles. When closed, 19 inches or 48cm CONDITION REPORT: . one stick has split and is secured with Sellotape.

Lot 4225

The Chinese Tea Ceremony: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the slender monture of ivory, the only decoration being to the upper guards, where a lightly carved border encloses various motifs carved withing three panels. The double paper leaf, with detailed painting in strong colours, shows a family gathered outdoors to take tea, a teapot and cup placed in the centre, a patterned low table to the left. Within a background of colourful, stylised flowers, one person is occupied reaching into a tree. One of the ladies carries either a fixed fan or mirror, one boy carries a spear. Some sections of the robes worn appear to be silk applied to the leaf. The verso is simply painted with flowers. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . One gorge stick is detached by present, the leaf slightly torn there this section has moved. Good strong colours.

Lot 4226

A Large Qing Dynasty Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, circa 1850, the two guards deeply carved with pagodas, figures and stylised trees, the eighteen inner sticks lightly carved recto/verso in a similar fashion, the stick tips curved. A shaped gold metal loop is fitted with a thin cream silk tassel. Guard length 9 inches or 23 cm. Together with a large carved and pierced bone brisé fan of the tea ceremony type, with regular design, two guards and fifteen inner sticks. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . Ivory fan, a few inner sticks very slightly warped as seen when closed. The tassel is a/f. Bone fan, some loss to one stick, some brown marking and possibly 2 sticks missing when examining the design.

Lot 4235

A Rare Circa 1840's Chinese Carved Mother-of-Pearl Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, the eighteen inner sticks and two guards showing shades of pink within the overall cream pearl. The guards are quite deeply carved with a figure at the tip and a dragon fills the remaining stick. The recto, with a small oval left uncarved for initials, is lightly carved throughout with figures, trees, and a large quantity of buildings, including a large pagoda. The verso is carved in a similar fashion. The rounded tips feature small animals, birds, and figures involved in different daily activities. Guard length 7.25 inches or 18.5cm CONDITION REPORT: There are 18 inner sticks and two guards. The central oval spans 3 sticks. To the left of the oval are 8 sticks. To the right there are only 7. This means there may be a stick missing. To try to determine this, the bottom end of the fan, where the sticks are linked by the rivet, has been examined. This shows that one stick is in the wrong place, as it is longer than the ones to each side, thus not making a smooth shape as would be expected. No chips or cracks or repairs to sticks have been noted.

The collation of a complete example is [22],376pp. Besides fencing, the engravings show gymnastic training on the horse and various wrestling techniques. Johann Andreas Schmidt was a German fencing master born circa 1650 in Marienberg, Germany. Sometime after 1671 (or after 1675), he studied fencing under the fencing master Johann Georg and Johannes Georgius Bruchius in Amsterdam. Schmidt's impressive fencing abilities were illustrated by a story that in 1712, as a result of a bet of 10 ducats, armed only with a stick, he took on "six strong farmers" in Altdorf in the area of Nuremberg and defeated them all, thus winning the bet. The following year, in 1713, he established his own fencing school in Nuremberg. In 1721 Georg Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1678-1726) the ruler of Bayreuth appointed Schmidt as a Page Fencing Master following the successful defeat and disarming of two fencing masters. He was awarded the appointment as a Page Fencing Master with a wage of 1,000 guilders. After the death of his patron probably after 1726, Schmidt returned to Nuremberg to continue his teachings. He then moved to teach in both Stuttgart and finally in Tübingen, where he died.

Launched to compete with the Lamborghini Muira and upgraded to compete with its successor, the Countach, the 'BB' was the first production Ferrari to be fitted with the boxer-type 12-cylinder engine derived from the Formula 1 unit of the period. The architecture was not that of the classic front-engined and rather upright, V12 Ferraris of old and it could be argued that the BB was the first 'proper' mid-engined Ferrari. The Boxer's moniker was derived from the fact that the cylinder banks form an angle of 180°, resulting in an engine with a flat, rectangular shape which enabled the car's centre of gravity to be lowered. The horizontally opposed pistons were said to resemble a pair of boxers alternating punches and the 'Boxer' nickname was to stick for this engine layout, even when used by other manufacturers. This low centre of gravity enabled the designers to pen the assertive stance that was to be typical of all future Ferraris. The BBi was the final evolution of the Boxer and was launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1981. The styling was left largely unaltered, but the car now featured an advanced, and far more reliable, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system offering 360bhp at 6,200 rpm, 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds and 179mph. Maranello's investment in mid-engine engineering ensured the BB's stylistic DNA was to be around until production of the Ferrari 328 ended in 1989, some 18 years since the launch of the original Boxer, the 365 BB. In the UK, just 42 right-hand drive versions of the BBi were ever imported making this model a very rare, desirable and collectable car. This, best of breed, UK right-hand drive 512 BBi is one of those 42 cars and was supplied new by Colmore Depot of Birmingham on 16th June 1982 finished in the classic colour combination of Rosso with Tan leather. It has the distinction of being one family-owned from new as the original owner is our vendor's father who has himself owned several significant Ferrari milestone cars over the years, including a Daytona, 308 GTS, 328 GTS and a 355 GTS which he still drives regularly at the age of 84! Passing the car to his son in 1998, it has since been enjoyed on a number of UK and European tours over the years, whilst being professionally maintained by a mix of Ferrari main agents and respected specialists. The comprehensive history file includes all relevant service invoices and documentation from new, as well as details of a substantial restoration which took place in 1997. This included a full-body repaint and an engine-out service with a 512TR single plate clutch conversion ~giving a lighter feel to the clutch and a much-enhanced driving experience. Today, the car has covered just 20,964 enjoyable and incident-free miles, making this one of the lowest mileage examples available and, looking at the photographs, it's clear to see that this is a very original car that's been cherished from new, well maintained and properly stored throughout its life. This is the first time that the family have ever offered the car for sale and, as such, it represents a very special opportunity for the discerning Ferrari enthusiast.
