A GEORGE III MAHOGANY CISTERN BAROMETER signed on the engraved and silvered register plate J Gatty LONDON, with vernier and mercury thermometer, the exposed tube on finely figured and herringbone banded stick, with conforming cistern cover and open triangular pediment centred by an urn finial, 95cm h James Gatty of High Holborn, London, working 1780-1815. He was one of the earliest Italian immigrant barometer makers. ++Some air in the tube, the wood of fine colour and patina with some build up of dust and grime on the pediment, the lacquered brass finial possibly an old replacement
