The vomiting spatulas were used during shamanic rites to prepare the priest (behique) purging him before the ritual intake of pulverized cohoba, a local hallucinogen mixed with tobacco to maximize its effect. The trance that followed served to put the behique in contact with the ancestral deities of the Tainopeople, the Cemi.
