Murder.- Matchless villany [sic]: or, a full and authentic narrative of the robbery and murder of John Penny, Esq; in a letter from a gentleman in London, to his friend in Hampshire, first edition, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initial, price at foot of title altered by hand from 6d. to 1s. 6d, some spotting and staining, lightly browned, modern half calf over 19th century marbled boards, red morocco label to spine, 8vo, Printed for J. Huggonson, 1741.⁂ Rare. John Penny had chambers in Clement's Inn, and was murdered by his servant John Hall, who lived with him there. Hall got himself into financial difficulties, and resolved to kill Penny in order to steal from him. Having removed his clothes in order to avoid detection Hall struck Penny with a stick and then cut his throat. He then hid the body in a cesspit. A few days later he went to Penny's nephew, Mr. Wooton, on pretence of enquiring after his master. So persistent was Hall with his enquiries, returning to Wooton's house several times, that Wooton became suspicious, and had Hall arrested. He was hanged in September 1741 and his body afterwards hung on chains on a highway in Shepherd's Bush. A print at the British Museum shows a naked Hall trying to drain Penny's blood into a chamber pot.
