*Churchill (Rt. Hon. Winston S., 1874-1965). Typed letter signed, Chartwell, Westerham, Kent, 20th February 1934, to W.E. Fretwell [Consulting Engineer], accepting an estimate for building work at Chartwell, salutation and signature in brown ink, some spotting and minor wear along vertical fold, one page, 4to, window-mounted along with four (unpublished?) b & w photos., two showing interiors of Chartwell, one an exterior and one of Churchill with walking stick and hat held high acknowledging a smiling crowd of onlookers each 11 x 16 cm, the whole framed and glazed The Churchill Papers have the original letters from Fretwell and the carbon copies from Churchill covering this period of correspondence concerning building matters. For the carbon copy of this item see Char 1/257/9 which indicates that the letter was for the installation of hot water boilers for a swimming pool at Chartwell. (1)

QUEEN VICTORIA AND OSBORNE HOUSE-A small collection of ephemera given to Edwin Craig, the Queen's Telegraphist at Southampton, including 3 charming manuscript menus for dinners in 1891 within chromolithographed borders, on card, 2 for Balmoral and one Osborne, 3 printed Entertainments and Visitors lists and a copy of a message, 8 items, together with A Royal Presentation stick-pin, the oval section of banded agate is mounted in gold with pellet border and engraved to the reverse 'I.M.O. Jan 20. 1896. from V.R.I.' In fitted case by Carrington. With a hand-written letter headed 'Osborne' to Edwin Craig on behalf of the Queen. *Queen Victoria was particularly grateful for Edwin Craig's help in transmitting messages for her, via Southampton, when illness struck, so much so that she sent him the gold tie pin as a token of her appreciation. Provenance: Consigned by the descendants.
