A Canton export folding fan, the ivory guards carved with a floral motif, the sticks shaped and pierced, with mother of pearl edged rivet and a shaped metal loop supporting a knotted double tassel, the silk leaf with machine embroidered dragon in pastel colours, guard length 18.5cm, width approx 29cm, in a lacquered box decorated in gilt with bird amongst blossoms and with a painted fabric interior. CONDITION REPORT: The rear guard and stick next to it are broken, the leaf is in good condition as is the front stick, the hinges to the box are broken.

A Dutch late 18th/early 19th century folding fan with bone pierced and inlaid guards with matching sticks forming a figural scene, with paste rivet, the paper mount painted with a large central shaped cartouche showing an angel staying the hand of Abraham in slaying Isaac, and two shaped rectangular cartouches either side painted with fruits and beehive, the single leaf painted verso with flowers and gilt foliage, guard length 28cm, width approx 49cm. CONDITION REPORT: Generally in good condition, a little wear to the folds, very little foxing, some losses to the stick inlay, all commensurate with age.

A early 19th century European folding fan with pierced shaped and metal inlaid bone guards and matching sticks with mother of pearl edged rivet and shaped gilt metal loop suspending a tassel, the paper double mount printed and overpainted with a scene of figures and a putto, the print signed with a monogram "EP" and edged with gilt heightened floral motifs, with painted river scene and floral sprays verso, with remnants of a feather edging, guard length 26cm, width approx 50cm. CONDITION REPORT: A small part of the paper mount is torn but present, the feather edging has been reduced to remnants, the last stick is supported by the rear guard and the two tied together, some wear to folds.

An early 19th century folding fan with plain mother of pearl guards and sticks with pierced bone slips and gilt metal loop, with leaf of cream netted lace decorated with flowers, foliage and five butterflies, guard length 24cm, width approx 42cm, in box marked "M Jesurum & Comp, Manufacturers Venice". CONDITION REPORT: Four of the slips have broken and have been sewn together taking in the leaf however the lace seems to be in good condition although coming away from the front guard stick a little. Guards and sticks in good condition.

CONDITION REPORT: In good condition with very little wear to the folds, slight tearing on the second stick.

A J Duvelleroy late 19th century folding fan, the bone guards studded with metallic dots with a house vignette to the front guard, the shaped sticks also studded and forming a scrolling cartouche containing the image of a house, with mother of pearl edged rivet and loop, the silk mount painted with a scene of lovers, embellished with small sequins, guard length 21.5cm, width approx 39cm, in original silk lined and silk covered box stamped "J Duvelleroy". CONDITION REPORT: A break to the front stick has been mended, some of the metallic studs are missing, some wear to the folds, a little foxing, generally good condition.

A late 19th century folding fan, the bone guard inscribed "N76", with plain bone sticks, mother of pearl edged rivet and shaped gilt metal loop, the white satin mount with a printed decoration of dancing putti with a maiden in a glade, guard length 28cm, width approx 49cm. CONDITION REPORT: The front guard stick has been repaired, otherwise good condition. The print is intact with only a little rubbing to the folds and only a little foxing.

A faux tortoiseshell and lace folding fan with shaped guards and sticks and metal loop, the machine lace leaf of black lace bearing a floral pattern, guard length 27cm, width approx 51cm and a smaller example with ebonised guards and sticks and black loop, the silk net mount with highlights of gilt metal spangles forming a leaf motif, guard length 24.5cm, width approx 44cm and a further folding fan with ebonised gilt heightened guards and sticks and printed paper mount in the 18th century style with figures in shaped cartouches, guard length 26.5cm, width approx 49cm (3). CONDITION REPORT: The black lace fan appears to thave originally had pink silk behind the lace which has been cut away but remnants remain. At least one of the sticks is loose, one has been mended and put back in the wrong position. Lace and spangles fan has crudely repaired rips, some lace missing, tears to folds, broken stick. Paper fan has tears completely through the fan in two or three places, broken stick, wear to folds.

A 20th century Mandarin style Hundred Faces fan, with black lacquer guards decorated with gilt heightened floral motifs and matching sticks, the painted mount showing figures in a garden setting with ivory painted faces and silk clothes, the reverse of the double sided mount showing a bird amongst blooms, guard length 26cm, width approx 45cm, a large Japanese fan with bamboo guards and sticks and shaped loop and flower decorated mount, guard length 39cm, width approx 72cm and two other smaller Japanese folding fans with bamboo guards and sticks and paper mounts (4). CONDITION REPORT: Hundred faces fan has a broken front guard which has been tied to the next stick, one of the faces is missing, there is wear to the folds on both sides. The large fan has wear to the folds, similarly, one of the smaller fans whilst the fourth fan has tears to the back of the mount and the sticks have been crudely attached with tape.

An Edwardian folding fan with carved and pierced bone guards and sticks with bone edged rivet and a loop, the silk leaf painted with flowers and set with a lace "A" and edged with lace, guard length 35cm, width approx 64cm (leaf af). CONDITION REPORT: The silk is in worn condition with tears and holes. The painting is intact as is the lace "A" and the edging. One stick is broken but present.

An early 20th century palmette folding fan with carved and pierced bone guards with circular motifs and matching sticks, star shaped edged rivet and shaped metal loop suspending a tassel, the palmette mount of shaped and embossed paper with gilt heightened flower and swag decoration and white feathers to the rim, guard length 34cm, width approx 45cm. CONDITION REPORT: The rear stick has been riveted and glued with repair made to the rear palmette, some losses to the feather trimming, otherwise in good condition.

An early 20th century large folding fan with ebonised carved guards and matching sticks with black edged rivet and steel loop, the silk leaf painted with purple and pink flowers and edged in black lace, possibly a mourning fan, guard length 35cm, width approx 64cm, boxed, box with inscription to lid "Tottenham House, London". CONDITION REPORT: Very little wear, good condition, stick coming loose in a couple of places, very little foxing to rear guard, box is a bit tatty with losses.

An early 20th century folding fan with carved and pierced guards with matching shaped pierced sticks, bone edged rivet and cream composite loop, the crepe mount hand-painted with a reclining lady and a flying putto, guard length 35cm, width approx 64cm. CONDITION REPORT: One stick is damaged and has been permanently secured behind the front guard and the fan leaf folded accordingly, the rear crepe has some tears and tatters, the front of the leaf is in good condition with some wear to folds and slightly discoloured.

An early 20th century English folding fan with gilt heightened ivory coloured painted wood guards and sticks, with a metal loop, the painted silk mount depicting swallows in flight amongst trees, with a plain leaf verso, guard length 34cm, width approx 60cm, in a fan box bearing the label for Kenneth's, Market Street, Manchester to inside. CONDITION REPORT: One stick is broken, one is loose. The fabric mount is in good condition with the painting intact. Some foxing.

CONDITION REPORT: Good condition. One stick moves to far but should be mendable. Feathers generally in good condition.

An Edwardian folding feather fan, the simulated tortoiseshell guards and sticks of plain form, and the leaf formed by yellow dyed ostrich feathers, guard length 25cm, width approx 74cm. CONDITION REPORT: One stick is loose from the others but easily mendable. The feathers are a little faded, but overall in good condition.

A mid 19th century Canton folding feather fan, the ivory guards carved with figures amongst trees and buildings, the sticks delicately pierced, with metal loop suspending a knotted tassel, and the mount made of brown striated feathers (possibly African partridge), guard length 24cm, width approx 44cm, in embroidered fan box (af). CONDITION REPORT: One of the sticks is broken, slight tear to feathers, guard stick has been crudely repaired, box very af.

Lot 246

A c.1780/1800 Canton brise fan with carved ivory guards and pierced ivory sticks forming a delicate floral and wreath motif behind a central oval initialled cartouche and two further circular panels decorated with peacocks with a floral and foliate internal border, the outer border decorated with flowers, insects and birds, guard sticks 24.5cm, width approx 38cm (af). CONDITION REPORT: The ribbon is perished. One stick is damaged and discoloured. There are several other very small losses to other sticks. None of sticks are missing. The guards are in good condition.

Lot 247

A 19th century Canton export brisé fan with carved guards with floral pattern with birds, tipped with a building scene, the pierced ivory sticks forming a floral background with birds for a central shield shaped cartouche surrounded by swags with initials, and flanked by two circular panels decorated with trees, the inner border of delicately pierced foliage with birds and each stick having a pierced floral roundel to the tip, guard length 25.5cm, width approx 43cm. CONDITION REPORT: The ribbon has perished so that the sticks are not held together, minor losses to some of the piercing, reinforcement to a break in the rear guard, otherwise good condition.

A 19th century Canton export brisé fan, the ivory guards finely carved with a floral motif and a scene of buildings at the end, the sticks pierced to form variously shaped panels all with different piercing centring on a shield shaped cartouche with a scene of buildings and trees, each stick having a decorative roundel to its end, with a mother of pearl edged rivet, guard length 27cm, width approx 40cm (one stick af). CONDITION REPORT: One stick is broken, both ends are present but a central section of this stick is missing. Very few other losses, mostly good condition. The ribbon needs adjusting.

A early 19th century French brise fan with pierced ivory guards with mother of pearl head, the pierced sticks forming cartouches, the central oval cartouche with a silk printed scene of classical figures and the shaped rectangular cartouches either side with fruit and insects, with roses to each end, and a rose centre verso, guard length 27cm, width approx 46cm. CONDITION REPORT: Good condition, very slight glue residue around ribbon, one stick reinforced verso, a little wear to paint decoration.

A pair of late 19th century European screen fans with ebonised wooden sticks, chinoiserie decorated, holding embossed paper shaped screens framing small watercolours painted en grisaille of a river scene and rural buildings, height of fans including stick 35cm, width 23cm. CONDITION REPORT: One of the paintings has a tear and one of the rivets holding stick to fan is missing.

An 1821 folding advertising fan with bone guards, sticks and rivet surround, detailing "Twelve setts of the most fashionable Quadrilles to be had at 545 Bazaar Soho Square", printed on both sides, guard length 20cm, width approx 30cm (guard af). CONDITION REPORT: The rear guard is snapped, the next stick missing and the next stick to that detached from mount. Crude repair to mount at that point.
