A First Half of the 18th Century Carved Ivory Fan, the monture with figures to the guards and gorge. The paper leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, shows the return of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15, 11-32), the parable in the Bible where a father welcomes the return of his younger son despite him having squandered his inheritance, simply thankful for his return. The verso is simply painted with a landscape. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm CONDITION REPORT: Issues with the join of ribs to gorge sticks, in that one is loose, one stick is missing, and others have been re-secured clumsily in the past. The rivet is too tight, probably due to the addition of the loop, and the fan is stiff to open.
Grand Tour Fan, circa 1776, (note date to right hand side of leaf), depicting the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius by day in the central panel and by night in the smaller panel to the right. Between these two scenes is a poem in Italian. To the left, a musical score accompanies a verse in Italian. The double skin leaf, mounted on ivory, has a trompe l'oeil design of a striped ribbon, which is repeated on the verso, surrounding a closer image of Vesuvius. The carved guards both feature the same chinoiserie figure and carving that features on the gorge. Contained in a pale pink 18th century card fan tube, onto which is written "The ??? painted with ???gold by Sir J Reynolds". Guard length 28cm CONDITION REPORT: . One gorge stick is loose but present, and has torn the underside of the leaf, with evidence of a previous attempt to re-secure. The undersides of both guards have a plain ivory panel, which are not matching, suggesting a period replacement to one. The leaf is generally rubbed on the folds, with tiny slits to the top of several folds, but all writing is clear. The verso is grubby, slightly foxed and rubbed, with further tiny tears.

A mid-19th century bone fan, the monture carved, pierced, and gilded, the double paper leaf lithographed with winged cherubs mingling with a group of ladies and gentlemen, the central figures having made a floral garland being used by one cherub as a swing. The verso is plain. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cm (5) CONDITION REPORT: . 1890's fan: Good colour and painting. One tiny pinhole noted nearer the centre bottom of the leaf. The monture and tassel are sound. The satin fan is slightly crumpled with one pale mark right of centre near the top border. The backing fabric on the sequin fan is splitting but the recto is sound. Fan 4, two of the folds are slightly strained but holding. The earlier fan has damage, the leaf having a bad split to a fold at the left, some upper leaf crumpling, and the middle section of the upper guard is missing, this accident having also dislodged the first stick in.

An Oversized Wood Brisé Fan from Germany or Austria, autographed on the verso, one date of 1901 visible thereon, predated by the images on the recto dated '98 and '99, and one to the right stating 1898 just to help precision. Each wide stick is printed with a different image, one of a cow, two with a soldier and horse, the rest of various people of different social standing…possibly known paintings. Guard length 12.25 inches or 31cm, upper sticks 2.75 inches or 7cm at the widest point CONDITION REPORT: . good colour to the recto, a pale area on the wood on the verso appears to be natural.

Death and The Maiden: A Very Unusual Fan, the monture of plain light pink mother of pearl, the coffee coloured silk satin leaf painted both sides. To the recto, a scene of a young man or prince sheltering under a large tree, taking respite from the weight of the deathly pale maiden dressed in white on his shoulder, as the Grim Reaper approaches from across a river bank, pink flamingos paddling to the background, carrying his spade, his robe belted with a cross on a chain **. To the verso, painted on a darker ginger silk, two cherubs hold flower garlands, decorating entwined initials, a green dragon and a banner beneath, dating the fan to the 11th February 1885 (or 1895), possibly in Portuguese. One word could be a name beginning with A which would relate to one of the initials. No signature noted. Guard length 12.75 inches or 32.5cm. Together with a bone fan, 19th century, the pale pink cotton leaf painted with a gentle scene of a shepherdess being pursued by her beau. Signed Guronnet (?). The verso of plain cream cotton. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm (2)In many great artworks, a maiden is portrayed as wearing white, with long cascading tresses, as the Grim Reaper approaches. Is the river in this depiction signifying the river Stix that the dead must cross on their way to Hades?**An alternative offered by an FCI member is that the figure is that of a Carmelite monk wearing a brown habit and a Christian cross. The monks were known to dig graves and indeed there is one here***Another alternative offered by an FCI member considers that that this scene depicts a version of a painting by Girodet that is at the Louvre (The burial of Atala), depicting the tragic love story of Atala or the love of two savages in the wilderness that was written by Chateaubriand (died 1848) that gave Girodet the subject of one of his most popular paintings. Set in primitive America of the 17th century, Atala is the story of a young Christian metisse who falls madly in love with Chactas, an 'Indian' whom she has saved from a death sentence. Taken in by a missionary, Father Aubry, after a long 'walkabout' the young lovers cannot live out their passion. Trapped by the vow made to her mother to dedicate herself to religion, Atala chooses suicide in order to avoid succumbing to her passion, despite Chactas' willingness to convert so as to be able to marry her. CONDITION REPORT: . The first fan has repairs on the shoulder to both guards. A sliver of mop is missing near the top of the upper guard. One gorge stick is loose from the rib, a repair having failed, and the lower edge of the leaf is a little stained, probably from attempts to secure the gorge sticks. Similar residue is apparent here and there near the side and top edges. The smaller fan is sound, save for loss to the top border binding the layers together.
A Large Late 19th Century Bone Fan, the monture plain, the double fabric leaf of cream silk, painted in soft pastels with a mountain scene and featuring a winged lady. Signed by G.
