A Chinese Late 19th Century Dark-Stained Carved Wood Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, contained in the original Chinese fitted and fabric covered fan box, the lid of glass. The nineteen inner sticks and two guards carved throughout with buildings, figures, and foliage, deeply for the guards, both sides for the inner sticks, have gently rounded tips. Guard length 9.3/8 inches or 24cmCrack near to the top of one stick, and couple of other small holes, ribbon has split, slight wear
Lot 134
A Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, circa 1840's, Qing Dynasty, contained in a shaped and glazed wooden fan case. The 20 inner sticks and two guards are finely carved, the rounded tips featuring flowers and buds. A shield with carved initials, MW, features in the centre, with two side vignettes with an unusual scalloped border depicting birds. The reserves are carved in bands, two with minutely carved rats and birds, the others with flowers and buildings. Verso not examined. Guard length approx. 7.5 inches or 19cmThe fan is sealed in the case so the verso has not been examined. Two minute slivers of ivory missing from one stick, two other sticks have 1 sliver missing. But all very minor. Clean, and does not appear warped.
Lot 115
A Large Early 20th Century Bone Fan, mounted with eau de nil silk and backed with gauze of a similar colour. Of balloon form, the leaf is embroidered with silver sequins of different shapes and sizes, in the design of swags and bows. The monture is lightly carved, pierced and gilded. Height to top centre when closed is approx 13.5 inches or 34.5cm; and An Early 20th Century Fan of Fontange Shape, the monture of light wood painted gold, the fine gauze leaf painted with a design of autumnal leaves, mainly in gold, with four small birds with fluffy chest feathers and inquisitive expressions in the central panel below. Height to top centre when closed is approx. 14 inches or 36cm (2)Fan 1 - One central gorge stick is detached from the rib. At this point the silk has been damaged to the lower edge of the leaf. At some point the fan has been pinned to something, a pin hole is evident to the top right side and to the left side there is also rust where the shape of a drawing pin can be seen. Fan 2 - The gauze is split in several places, and the top edge has losses. No signature noted.
Lot 109
An Unusual Gothic Regency Brisé Fan, the inner sticks of pale horn, the guards of gold metal with mother of pearl inlay to the tips. The monture features very pointed sticks, and a rare trefoil shape to the rivet. The guards are intricately moulded with flowers on panels which are set into the main borders. The twenty inner horn sticks are pierced and gilded, the tips clouté with silver roundels. T/W a silver metal fan tube. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cmOne central stick missing, the rivet fragment present. The ribbon needs replacing. When closed, seen to be very slightly warped.

A Good 18th Century Fan, with tortoiseshell guards and gorge sticks in pairs alternating between mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell. The quite slender guards are carved, pierced and gilded, the very tips with a cherub beneath which is a polished oval perhaps awaiting initials. The gorge sticks are classically carved and feature gilded figures, one pair combining to make a sun and rays. The double paper leaf shows a family and friends engaged in various activities in a clearing, one lady holding a birdcage, another with two more cages strapped to a pole, a little boy plays with his dog, and others make flower garlands. The verso is painted with a simple scene of a couple in the countryside. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Contained in a card fan box with lift-off lid, the exterior painted with red fruits and blue flowers, the underneath marked 3357 in old inThe monture is in fairly robust condition but several of the MOP gorge sticks have been repaired with slivers of MOP from behind and one tortoiseshell stick to the right has been repaired with thin slivers of metal down the sides. The leaf is slightly dry and has one noticeable split to the left.

The Worshipful Company of Fan Makers: A Late 19th Century Cream Gauze Fan, mounted on simple wooden sticks painted in gold and with gold patterns on the gorge. The single leaf is painted in vibrant colours with the Arms of the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers, one of the Livery Companies of London, incorporated by Royal Charter in 1709. The Arms bear the motto ''Arts and Trades United''. The fan also has the Arms for the City of London with the motto ''Domino Dirige Nos'' meaning '' Lord, Guide us'' and a third shield, green, with 3 lions and the motto ''Semper Vigilans'' meaning ''always vigilant''. Two fans are incorporated into the overall design. Red and yellow ribbons are attached to the fan loop along with a label for a Ball held on the 28th June 1889, presented with the compliments of the Master and Mrs A G Hennell. Guard length 14 inches or 35.5cm The Fan Makers original coat of arms are recorded in Maitland's History of England of 1739 and a Company minute book of 1775 which both show very similar coats of arms for the Company. There appear to have been variations in design over the years. The Company's website explains that the tools show are actually tools used by a stick maker not a fan maker. See also lot ….The gauze is split to the right side, next to the guard to the central folds and elsewhere, making the fan difficult to fold.

An Elegant Regency Bone Fan, with classical carving and piercing to the upper guards and gorge sticks, the double paper leaf with main detail to the upper border, where brown silk ribbon is overlaid and then embroidered with silver sequins, accompanied by delicate drawing of flowers and fringing. The verso is plain. A Further Regency Classically Carved Bone Fan, the leaf printed to the centre with a charming scene of two young girls adoring a small pony with flower garlands. The cartouche and upper section are embellished with silver sequins and foils of various forms and sizes; and A Circa 1830-40 Bone Fan, the monture carved and pierced, silvered and gilded, the guards overlaid with mother-of-pearl. The double velum leaf is painted to the recto with a scene of couples at leisure near ruined buildings, one with a dog wishing to play. The verso features a simple floral spray. Guard lengths 23.5cm, 25cm and 27cm respectively (3)The first fan is generally in good order, if a bit grubby. The second fan lacks a guard, the upper guard is repaired, one gorge stick is missing and the fan is generally grubby. The third fan has losses to the mop overlay, and damage to two gorge sticks. The silvering is dull.

An Early 19th Century Wooden Fan, mounted with a sea green double paper leaf, completely plain save for a silver top border. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm; A Late 18th Century Carved And Pierced Wood Brisé Fan, the top half of all sticks carved and pierced with classical designs, some colour highlights. A central applied vignette of a gravure on paper shows a pensive lady in classical flowing robes, a dog at her feet. To each side, a rectangular vignette painted onto the sticks, containing stylised swags and flowers. The verso is plain. Bone thumb guards. Twenty-eight inner stick plus two guards. Guard length 9.5inches or 24cm; A Late 18th Century Wood Brisé Fan, carved and pierced throughout with roundels and a central shield containing initials. Twenty-seven inner sticks and two guards. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm; and A Late 18th Century Wood Brisé Fan, with Chinoiserie style decoration, the twenty four inner sticks and two guards carved and pierced and featuring 6 ovals. Centrally, the applied paper panel depicts a rural scene with rocks, stylised trees, a bridge spanning a river on which basic boats are travelling. A multi storey pagoda style building sits atop the rocks. To the left, however, is a much more European style building with a stone tower, and castellated walls behind. The verso is plain. Guard length 11 inches or 27.5cm (4)Fan 1 - Generally good, some rubbing to the folds. Fan 2 - The ribbon needs replacing. One stick is broken at the tip and repaired on the verso. Several of the stick tips have loss. Fan 3 - The upper guard has part of the next stick in stuck to it, and the guard itself has damage. The lower guard has 2 metal plate repairs. At least 3 of the inner sticks have losses. The ribbon needs replacing. Fan 4 - At least 2 sticks are missing, the large ovals are missing one stick at each side.
Lot 50
An Early 20th Century Carved and Pierced Bone Fan, the double leaf mounted à la Sultane, silk panels painted with flowers between the sticks, bobbin lace for the top border. The verso, of silk, is painted with simple colourful flowers. Together with a Jenny Lind or Palmette fan, the bone monture carved and pierced, gilded and silvered, the leaf panels punched with various floral patterns, and gilded, the tips particularly detailed, and a late 19th century bone fan, the monture quite plain save for unusual tips to the guards and the ribs. The cream silk leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is painted in a pale eau de Nil with a spray of roses and foliage. Guard lengths 20. cm, 27cm and 27cm respectively (3)Both guards broken one inner stick stuck to the lower guard. Brown staining to the top border of the verso. The jenny Lind lacks top panels to both guards and sticks are stuck. Several leaf panels are damaged. The silvering is dull. The third fan is in good strong condition.
Lot 18
A French Revolutionary Period Printed Fan, 1793, mounted on bone, the double paper leaf printed with the Testament of King Louis XVI, a central stipple engraved medallion containing eight portrait busts of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Mme. Premiere, La Comtesse de Provence, La Comtesse d'Artois, Le Comte d'Artois, Le Compte de Provence, and Le Dauphin. The verso is plain. King Louis XVI was born on August 23rd 1754 and died on the 21st of January 1793. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm Exhibited at Fan Maker's Hall, 4th to 5th December 1980 catalogue # 30Lacks one gorge stick and rib. At this point the leaf has been repaired from behind. There are other areas of weakness/splitting, note the first inch in from the left to the bottom border of the leaf.

A Late 18th/Early 19th Century Printed Fan, ''New Country Dances'', the double paper leaf mounted on light coloured and unpolished wood sticks. The recto, bordered in pale pink, is printed with'' Eighteen of the most Favourite New Country dances'', with directions for the steps, and musical scores. Dances include ''Whim of the Moment'' and Kifs me Sweetly''. The verso is printed with a simple design of musical instruments. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Together with an 18th century card fan tube in mottled green and orangeSome nicks to the tips of the folds. One stick to the left has split slightly and been glued. Slight damage to the leaf to the left near the bottom edge.

A Circa 1840's Chinese Carved Tortoiseshell Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, with 19 inner sticks and two guards. The sticks are carved on both sides, the guards more deeply. A central oval with rope effect border contains small figures, a building and foliage. Below this an elder appears to be welcoming a visitor on horseback. Further groups of quite large scale figures fill the remainder of the fan, with several buildings, and stylised trees filling any remaining space. A classically carved border divides this carving from the tips, each of which features a figure, some wearing robes, each undertaking different activities. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cmGenerally very good, one central stick has a small loss to the tip, and two others have small slivers missing Very slight nibbles to side edges. Not examined under UV light. Contained in a non-period card box. New ribbon required.

A 19th Century Printed Card Brisé Fan, designed with eight inner sticks each with a view of Arundel, printed in pale lilac, each one with relevant titles, ten sticks in all. Printed by J Newman and Co 48 Watling Street London, registered 1874. Guard length 7.25 inches or 18.5cm; and The Illustrated Fan: A 19th Century Card Brisé Fan, illustrated with ten views of Brighton and naming the sites, the fan with the addition of two guards. Circa 1906, A Wooden Brisé Autograph Fan, with seventeen inner sticks and two guards, a pencil contained in the tip of the lower guard. Various signatures, dating between 1906 and 1910, some relating to the Bavarian town of Bayreuth. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cmOne stick near the centre damaged and repaired. Ribbon sound. Some adhesive residue from price labels evident on both guards.

An Early 19th Century Pale Horn Brisé Fan, slightly gilded, the sticks with pointed tips, and painted with flowers to the recto. The monture is set with small silver metal roundels. The verso is plain. Guard length 7 inches or 18cm. Together with a wooden box of the correct size, varnished, the lid painted with flowers; and A Late 19th Century Pale Horn Fan, the cream gauze leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, and embroidered with swags and bows and flowers in tiny gold and silver sequins. The monture is gilded and painted in silver on the guards in noticeably Art Nouveau style. Guard length 8 inches or 20cm (2)Fan 1 - Generally sound, paint rubbed, needs replacement ribbon. Fan 2 - The sticks are all present but at least one needs re-securing. The gauze is strong, one tiny hole next to a stick, hard to see.
Lot 68
A Circa 1880s Bone Fan, the monture carved and pierced, perhaps in the fashion produced by the tabletiers of Meru, France, with flowers and leaves carved to the guards and a central more elaborate panel to the gorge. The double silk leaf, in cream, is mounted with a leaf in handmade Mixed Brussels lace, the major part in bobbin applique with a top border featuring needlelace; A Smaller Early 20th Century Lace Fan, of Bruges Bobbin lace, not backed, mounted on bone sticks which have been painted where flowers feature; and A Third Fan, the bone monture carved and pierced with roundels, the black gauze leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, applied with a floral spray of Brussels bobbin lace. Guard lengths 28.5cm, 22cm and 23cm respectively (3)Mixed Brussels fan, the gorge is missing a stick. The Bruges fan appears in good general order, and the applique fan has some slight loss to the delicate piercing, with four of the gorge sticks being reinforced from the verso
