Late Medieval candlestick. Circa, 15th-16th century AD. Copper-alloy, 121mm x 73mm, 155.7g. A rare piece complete with its original base. The stick has a central raised collar and widens at the top to form the candle socket which is decorated with turned bands and ribs. The lower part of the stick is flared at the join with the circular base. Domed slightly in the centre with a raised rim around the outer edge the base has a series of decorative rings centred around the stick. Ref: Egan (2005: 81, nos. 337-338) publishes a pair of very similar candle sticks of two different lengths with varying numbers of collars, both excavated in 16th century contexts in London. Brownsword (1985, no. 7) illustrates another similar candlestick which he dates to the late 15th or early 16th centuries.
