A superb 18th century scrimshaw/poker work decorated walking stick originally the property of Captain W Broughton of HMS Providence, who also served on HMS Victory. The cane is decorated with images of five ships, animals and figures, related to his time at sea. In 1793 Broughton was given command of HMS Providence which he took to North West America and then on to a four year voyage charting the Asian coastline until the ship was wrecked in 1797 off Miyako Island, Japan, the location of which is now called Providence Reef. The crew were saved and most of the ship's contents salvaged.
A 28 BORE DAY'S PATENT PERCUSSION UNDERHAMMER WALKING STICK GUN, BIRMINGHAM PROOF MARKS, NO.18 CIRCA 1840 with tapering sighted barrel threaded at the breech, rounded under-hammer action with folding trigger, stamped '18' on the left, engraved 'Day's Patent UK' on top (worn), figured hardwood grip inset with a threaded iron collar (worn) 87.0 cm; 34 ¼ in overall John Day patented this model of cane in 1823 under British Patent no. 4861. Apparently it was the most popular design for a cane of this type and was still in use circa 1859. See Winant 1956, p. 136.
