Historically Interesting Grouping Relating to P/JX212116 P A Pidgeon of HMS Juno, Who Survived when the Ship was Sunk, Including a Diary Carried on Him Personally Whilst in the Water and a Descriptive Letter Detailing the Incident, the grouping mainly including letters sent to him and from him during the war, is housed in a period suitcase. A number of Naval messages are also amongst the letters which mostly relate to his time serving on HMS Ajax. One of the most interesting letters in the grouping, is one written to his Mother which states “I have been anxiously waiting for a time like this to give you more news. I do hope you received my telegram before the loss of the Juno was announced on the wireless, as this would have been a terrible shock to you”, he goes on in this letter to explain what happened to the ship, “It’s grand to be alive!, I am perfectly well, all cuts and bruises are now healing up. I had a miraculous escape. The ship sank in under 90 seconds. I was in the office on my set when the stick of bombs hit. The upper deck started caving in and the office became full of a sticky smell and a cloud of dust and flames. Immediately the deck went to an angle of 45o and the ship continued to lift until she snapped mid ship, when the bows were left sticking out of the surface of the water.” he continues onto when he is out of the ship “the water was crowded with the black heads and faces and when I submerged I found out what this blackness was - oil. I was in the water about 30 minutes and when I was picked up i was wearing a pair of under pants, overall shirt and trousers, pair of slippers and my life belt which I had half blown up. I never thought I should ever be swimming for my life in the Aegean Sea.” Also included in the grouping is the blue covered rubberised life belt, which he mentioned in the letter to his mother. One of the other more interesting items is his personal diary that must of been in his pocket when he was in the water. The last entry in the diary is on Monday 19th May 1941, he states “0530 PUT TO SEA AEGEAN SEA”. HMS Juno was a J class destroyer of the Royal Navy. She participated in the Battle of Calabria in July 1940 and the Battle of Cape Matapan in March 1941. She was sunk on 21st May 1941, by an attack from an Italian aircraft, while sailing with the Mediterranean fleet against the German seaborne invasion of Crete. At the time of the attack HMS Juno was commanded by Cdr St J R J Tyrwhitt and would have had a compliment of 183-218 seaman and officers on board. 116 men were lost when the ship was sunk.
