‘I am against shooting down unarmed men’ COLLINS, Michael.  An important TL, unpublished and apparently unrecorded, 29 July 1922, addressed to GOVERNMENT, responding to a ‘suggested Proclamation warning all concerned that troops have orders to shoot prisoners found sniping, ambushing etc.’.  1 pp, on headed notepaper of Óglaigh na hÉireann, Office of Adjutant General, GHQ, Portobello Barracks, signed in a secretarial hand Micheal Ó Coileáin, Commander-In-Chief.  Later inscription in blue ink bottom left, small tear top left where apparently torn from a file, no loss. A most important statement of Collins’ views on a crucial issue, just over three weeks before his death in a roadside ambush.  ‘It is for Government to come to a decision .. The Troops will obey whatever orders may be issued .. I may say that I am in favour of drastic action being taken, but I am against shooting down unarmed men in any circumstances where it is known to the Troops that the men are unarmed.  This would not, naturally, refer to a man who deliberately shoots a soldier and then throws down his rifle and puts up his hands.’ Collins goes on to say, ‘So far as Dublin is concerned I have already small groups of men in Mufti on the streets.  These men have been carefully chosen and their work will be slow.  Grave dangers can easily be forseen [sic], and the selection will, therefore, have to be very carefully made.’ The letter does not bear Collins’ signature, but in our view there is no doubt of its authenticity.  It was apparently drafted in response to a letter from President Cosgrave in connection with the suggested Proclamation, itself a response to earlier letters from Collins.  See Coogan, 'Michael Collins', p. 394; Hart, 'Mick: The Real Michael Collins', p. 404.  Neither of these works quotes the present Collins letter, and it appears to be unrecorded. It is possible that Collins had second thoughts, and decided not to send the letter; but in our view it is more likely that the letter was sent but not delivered, or was later removed from the file.  Postal deliveries were frequently raided around this time.  The later inscription refers to the death of Barney Daly, ‘found dead soon after this (18 bullet wounds)’, etc., probably an Irregular.  This indicates that at some point the letter was in the hands of persons sympathetic to the Irregulars, and it is most likely in our view that this letter was intercepted in the post and never delivered. It is in any case a clear and important statement of Collins’ views on a crucial issue, literally a matter of life and death, a few weeks before his own death. Cian O'Heigeartaigh, 2023

A George III Chippendale period padouk card table,mid-18th century, in the 'Gothick' taste with strung decoration and a concertina action, the hinges stamped 'H. Tibats', with chamfered square supports,91cm wide45cm deep74cm highMany fine pieces of 18th-century furniture, particularly card tables, bear the stamp ‘H. TIBATS’ on their hinges. The stamp almost certainly refers to Hugh Tibbatts, ‘hinge and sash fastening maker‘ of Bell Street, Wolverhampton, listed relatively late in the 1781 Pearson & Rollason Directory for Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Bilston and Willenhall. A concertina-action card table, c.1755-60, with quadrant hinges stamped ‘H. Tibats’ is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum (W.65:1-1962).Literature: P Thornton, 'A Signed Hinge', Journal of the Furniture History Society, Leeds, 1966, pp.44-45, pl.XXIII.

Master of 338 after Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema O.M., R.A. (1836-1912)Classical ladies seated on a marble benchoil on canvasBears signature, inscribed 'copyright', inscribed verso by 'Lawrence Alma-Tadema R.A., Abbey Road Studios NW, No.6 this painting was sold for reproduction' (Copyright Reserved). See our footnote. ***CONDITION REPORT***Oil on original canvas in good untouched condition, possibly needs a clean but no real faults noted, signed and inscribed 'Copyright' with further artist's inscription verso, housed in a tatty gilt gesso frame. The lot description states that the picture is "signed, inscribed 'copyright'", when in fact it bears a signature followed by an Opus number. Alma-Tadema invariably signed his paintings 'L. Alma-Tadema', this picture is signed 'L. A. Tadema'. The Opus number 'CCCMMMVIII' which appears on the painting is already ascribed to a painting by Alma-Tadema of the daughter of Edward Onslow Ford: https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-4026905 That painting was misreported as being destroyed and in successive years a number of fake paintings appeared on the market, all with the same Opus number. The forger was duly dubbed 'Master of 338', although his identity has not been established. Other pictures by the same hand include:https://www.artnet.com/artists/sir-lawrence-alma-tadema/printemps-PCmYpJ2zJIfQ5jYel0U5UA2https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-4277232https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/alma-tadema-lady-laura-london-1852-1909-circle-yo-%20%20%20%201894-c-6pvwk3cxk6 all of which bear the CCCXXXVIII Opus number. It appears that the old inscription on the back of the canvas was deliberately added to mislead. Alma-Tadema never lived or worked at Abbey Road Studios. The Georgian townhouse at No.3 Abbey Road only became known as 'Abbey Road Studios' when it was bought by the Gramophone Company Ltd in 1929. And the inscription 'The Painting was sold for Reproduction' is again misleading. If it was genuine, one would expect it in the past to have been reproduced amongst Alma-Tadema's known works, which it is not.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
