Cartographic Miscellany ([Monsters] Meerwunder und Seltzame Thier / wie die in den Mitnachtigen Landern / im Meer und auff dem Landt Gefunden Werden), Munster, Cosmographia, Basel, ca. 1628. 13.5 x 10”. (HC) This is one of the more fanciful cartographic curiosities and a unique view of Renaissance attitudes toward the unknown lands beyond the civilized world. This woodblock illustration presents a compendium of monsters that were thought to exist in the sixteenth century, and used by many subsequent mapmakers to illustrate the creatures thought to inhabit the seas and land of the unexplored world. Across the top is a panel showing land-based creatures, including reindeer, elk (here shown pulling a sleigh), snakes and a gluttonous bear. The majority of the `monsters` are ferocious sea creatures shown devouring hapless sailors and wrecking ships. There is a massive lobster shown with a person in its claws, and a huge, fanged whale erupting fountains of water from its head, as well as a tree that appears to bear ducks as fruit. German text on verso. Ref: Manasek, p. 118. Wide, original margins with light soiling. There are two small holes along centerfold in blank margins. (+B)
Black Hills, South Dakota (U. S. Geological and Geographical Survey Of The Black Hills [with] Report on the Mineral Wealth…and Natural Resources of the Black Hills of Dakota), U.S. Department of Interior, Washington D.C., 1875-76. 18 x 16”. (BW) This map shows the Black Hills area which is flanked by the North and South Forks of the Cheyenne River. There is incredible detail of relief through hachure and many elevation points are noted. There is a note at bottom left that identifies gold districts including Bear Lodge Range and the Elk, Box Elder and Spring creeks to name a few. Included with the map is a 71 pp. report by Walter Jenney that describes the recently-discovered gold occurrences and early mining operations in the area. This report corroborated an earlier account of gold by G.A. Custer in 1874. Jenney`s map and report were released in 1876 and caused a massive rush of prospectors and immigrants to the region, which was considered sacred land by the Sioux. This influx of people led to the Great Sioux War of 1876-77 and the demise of Custer at Little Bighorn. A scarce and important report. Ref: Wheat no.1264. Condition code is for the map. There is just a hint of toning along the folds, else fine. The report is disbound and the pages have a hint of toning. (A)
Russia ([Lot of 2] Russiae, vulgo Moscovia dictae, Partes Septentrionalis et Orientalis [and] Russiae, vulgo Moscovia, Pars Australis), Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1680. 21.3 x 16.5”. (BW) This lot includes a matched pair of maps of Russia, each of which includes a strapwork title cartouche that credits the map to Isaac Massa, who visited Moscow in the early 1600s. The maps have no text on verso indicating they were issued after the demise of the great Blaeu publishing empire, as these were among the plates auctioned in 1677 following the fire that destroyed the printing house. Size varies slightly. A. Russiae, vulgo Moscovia dictae, Partes Septentrionalis et Orientalis. This map details the area from Finland to Siberia and beyond the Jenisej River and south to the Volga River, with Kazan and Novogorod shown. A partial coastline of Novaya Zemla is shown at the top of the map. The map is fully engraved with mountains and forests with deer, bear and other animals throughout. The title cartouche is flanked with pelts, and hunters and a wide variety of animals surround the scale of miles. The crest of the Russian Empire is shown at top. The map is nearly identical to Jansson`s map of the same title. Condition: Scattered foxing with paper added in bottom blank margin to repair several chips that enter map border in a couple of spots, with minor loss of neatline. B. Russiae, vulgo Moscovia, Pars Australis. This map covers the southern part of the empire bordering the Caucasus. The map is elaborately embellished with richly dressed people and wild animals flanking three cartouches. The imprint of Johann and Cornelius Blaeu is at bottom, just left of centerfold. Condition: Light foxing with paper added in bottom corners to repair several chips, one of which just touches neatline at left. Both are backed with Japanese tissue. See description for additional details. (B)
Atlases (Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique, Politique et Historique, Ancienne et Moderne…), Brue, Paris, [1822]. 14.5 x 21.5”. (HC) This complete atlas has a Table of Contents that calls for 36 maps, but in fact contains 40 double-page maps. The contents call for separate maps of east and west France, but has instead a single large folding map of France. It also has 5 maps not listed in the Table of Contents: Russia & northern Europe, England & Wales, northern Africa, eastern US, and northern South America. The atlas contains two world maps, maps of each continent, maps of the ancient world, and great maps of the United States, North America, and Mexico that includes all of the Southwest. All of the maps bear the imprint "Gravée sous le direction de l`auteur" as well as Brue`s embossed seal "Carte encyprotipe du fonds de l`auteur," and are beautifully engraved and surrounded by a decorative keyboard border. The map Carte Generale des Etats-Unis de l`Amerique Septentrionale (cf Wheat TMW no.336) was probably based on work of Arrowsmith and Melish with information from the Lewis & Clark and Humbolt`s expeditions. This handsome and finely engraved map covers the United States with most of Mexico and a bit of Canada. The United States are shown with their claims into British Columbia (District de la Colombia) and Spain still controls all of Texas and the Southwest, most of which is blank with only conjectural topography shown. The West also features some fictitious rivers, including the R. Buenaventura, flowing from the Rockies into L. Teguayo, and the dotted R. St. Phelipe flowing from that lake into the Pacific at Monterey. Farther south the Rio de las Pyramydes is suggested near the short R. de los Martires, both of which appear to go nowhere. Half green leather with gilt titling and designs on spine, marbled paper-covered boards with title engraved on a pink label on front cover. Maps have beautiful original color with wide margins and are in near fine to very good condition with faint offsetting, light toning along sheet edges and an occasional small spot. Both maps of western Russia have pencil notations in blank margins. Hinges are starting. Spine and covers are worn and stained with bumped corners and tails. (+B)

A rare Coade stone gatepier in the form of a muzzled and coroneted bear surmounted on a coronet 89cm.; 35ins high see footnote to lot ......... This piece forms the cresting to a coat of arms. The muzzled bear head with foliage was adopted by a few families including Berreton, Brereton, Gauntlet, Parker, St Michael, St Mitchell, Vincent and White. It was almost certainly individually commissioned as one of a pair to serve as gate piers tops at the entrance to an estate. Literature; See Fairburn’s Crests of the Families of Great Britain and Ireland, 1986 New Orchard Further research has revealed that this was one of a pair of armorial bears with coronets made for the gate piers of Hennerton House, Wargrave, Berkshire by the well known architect and designer C.H.Tatham.See Mrs Coade’s Stone,SPA, 1980 page 195
