A 19th century oak and cast iron Jockey scales / sack scales by Young and Son Bear Street, wooden chair and plateau upper with cast iron roberval scale frame, 82cm W x 49cm D, with a selection of brass and cast iron weights including some examples by Young. Provenance: Formerly the property of the Earl of Alisa, Culzean Castle Ayrshire. Possibly ordered in the 19th century by one of the Earls for the castle. Originally sold at auction in Edinburgh it was later purchased by the current vendor at Great Western Auctions in 2011

First edition, quarto, illustrated with fifteen folding plates, views, and illustrations (three of which are folding maps), and thirteen folding typographical tables, half-title and Directions to the Bookbinder both present; bound in contemporary sponged calf, with gilt spine, marbled endleaves; some marginal softness to fore-edges, neat repairs to endcaps and corners, 10 x 8 in. "This expedition of the Racehorse and Carcass, undertaken for the purpose of discovering a route to India through the northern polar regions, was blocked by pack ice north of Spitzbergen. The valuable appendix gives geographical and meteorological observations, zoological and botanical records, accounts of the distillation of fresh water from the sea, and astronomical observations. The voyage is perhaps best remembered for the presence of young Horatio Nelson, as midshipman aboard the Carcass, and his encounter with a polar bear." A set of four 19th Century beech and elm Provincial bar back kitchen chairs with shaped seats on turned and rigned legs united by H stretchers, bear makers stamp to rear of seat "A. F" CONDITION REPORTS One chair has damage to the back left hand corner, another appears to have a replacement stretcher or at least repositioned. Three backs are loose and there are signs of old worm throughout on all chairs mainly on the seat, otherwise wear and tear, surface scratches etc all conducive with age and use. Does not appear to have had any dramatic loss in height although some backlegs are worn - see images for more details
