A rare and probably unique set of forty three English silver and enamel thimbles by Peter Swingler (died 2015) commemorating the Presidents of the United States of America 1801-2009. Each thimble with an enamel oval portrait of the relevant president flanked to each side by an eagle, to the reverse an oval enamel plaque giving name, dates served and numerical ranking, within a cast scroll frame, over a frieze in blue enamel ïPresidents of AmericaÍ (43)A letter dated 22nd November 2009 from P. Swingler to Mary Cruwys states the following:Dear Mrs CruwysI was pleased to hear from your letter that you have received, the Presidents of America. The sets were painted approximately 20 years ago, and only 3 sets were completed. I have noted from your letter that you would like your set brought up to date. Starting with:- Grover Cleveland for his 2ND term No. 24 also No. 38 Gerald Ford for his 2ND term No. 41 George H. Bush } No. 42 Bill Clinton } Total six No. 43 George W. Bush } thimbles No. 44 Barrack Obama } At this moment the Silver Thimbles are now being made ready for me to start painting. The cost for each Thimble would be £90.00 and will be completed in the new year. Would you please let me know if you have any queries. We hope you are both keeping well.Yours SincerelyP SwinglerThere are several discrepancies and anomalies in the letter. It appears that Mrs Cruwys had only received her set shortly before the letter was written not when the sets (one of only three) were apparently made, circa 1989. The second thimble for Grover Cleveland referred to does not appear with the present lot, the fact that 41-44 were ordered probably makes this the only set of this magnitude. In a further contradiction the majority of the thimbles are hall marked for 1984 the exception being (1) (6) (27) which are for 1977 (10) (11) (12) for 1986 (38) (41) (42) (43) and (44) which are for 2003, all bear Peter SwinglerÍs makers mark with the exception of (38) (41) (42) (43) which are apparently marked G & H. Why Swingler states in 2009 ñat this moment the thimbles are being madeÆ’..and will be completed in the new year when he was using blanks supplied in 2003 requires interpretation.(From the collection of the late Mary Cruwys).
