Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883-1937) - Iona, East Bay Oil on board Signed lower left Further signature and inscription on reverse: «sorbant ground never varnish/ Iona by F.C.B.Cadell/ (East Bay)' 37 x 44.5 cm. (14 1/2 x 17 1/2 in) Unframed Provenance: Gifted by the artist to present owner's father; Thence by descent. Having moved to Paris with his mother in 1899, Cadell, the youngest of the four painters known as the Scottish Colourists, had been exposed from a young age to the innovative use of colour and painterly handling in the works of Matisse, and other artists working in France before 1914.[1] Cadell and his fellow Colourists produced an innovative approach to these develpoments, where they rendered objects in space through a dramatic language of colour and form. "Iona presented Cadell and Peploe with the challenge of bringing [their] knowledge and experience to bear on a landscape of gentler, cooler and more subtler light " [2] The present painting is part of a larger body of work executed on the island of Iona, where Cadell was to explore the potential of a new painterly approach that was to flourish in the highly conducive natural environment of the island. It was in the summer of 1912 that Cadell made his first trip to Iona, a small island off the rugged West Coast of Scotland, and the artist was to return annually, often spending several months there at a time. In 1920 Cadell moved to Edinburgh, and in the summer of the same year made his first trip to the island of Iona with his friend and fellow Colourist Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935).[3] The crisp white beaches, the swift changes in light and shadow, and the remote landscape with little sign of human development, was to become a recurring source of inspiration that was to be continually explored thoughout Cadell's oeuvre.
